'Melges Skippers meeting at Yachting Cup 2010' Lynn Fitzpatrick
While horses jockey for a passing lane at Churchill Downs during the Kentucky Derby on May 1st, crews will be fighting for clear air off the starting lines and around the buoys set by San Diego Yacht Club during Yachting Cup.

With fifteen boats, the J105's will turnout the largest one-design fleet in the regatta and the Melges 24's are close behind with an even dozen. The Melges 24 sailors are sailing three races in San Diego's South Bay on Friday in the California Cup, a three-day Melges series incorporated into Yachting Cup. For all sailors interested Melges 24's or anyone wanting to pick up sail trim and boat handling tips from Vince Brun of North Sails Once Design, Brian Porter and Charlie McKee, stop by SDYC at 5:00 pm on Friday for clinic near the hoist, which will be followed by a casual pre-regatta reception. Fleet breaks will be posted on the notice board on Friday evening also.

Strong fleets and fierce one-design competition are also in store for the J/120's, Farr 40's, J/80's, Schock 35's and TP52's.

Look for Anarchy and Mile High Klub to be the early pace setters among the fast and fun Flying Tiger 10m's. John Rickard and Scot Tempesta's Anarchy is fresh off a PHRF Overall win in The Border Run, yet Payson Infelise holds the Fleet 1 championship title with Mile High Klub. Yachting Cup's eight-boat social SoCal fleet promises to be competitive and is looking forward to getting together at Saturday night's party.

IRC, ORR and PHRF rated boats, including the ULDB's Taxi Dancer and Grand Illusion, are set to enjoy the buoy racing on the West Ocean Course. The Roads and the South Bay venues will also be used and fleets will encounter a variety of conditions during the regatta as the stormy weather system that has hovered over Southern California and heavy swells abates.

The NOR, SI's and scratch sheet are posted at www.SDYC.org/yachtingcup/ . Skipper's meeting for 2-day competitors at 1015 on Saturday on SDYC deck.
