Quit being a whiney little... Dave Kalama's Pep Talk

Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama support cystic fibrosis.
Dave Kalama is one of the biggest legends in stand up paddling, he knows his stuff, he shares it willingly and it’s usually pretty funny when he does so.

At this years Carolina Cup, on a windy, wet and cold looking day, he stood up in front of a group of stand up paddlers and told them about the worst day of stand up paddling he’s even had. Training for the Molokai to Oahu event, he was training hard, too hard as he says and it took its toll on his body.

Eventually putting him out of the running, his overtraining left him with low energy reserves during the race. He lost his position, couldn’t get it back and thought about giving up. But on his way to the rescue boat, thinking about a fundraiser he’s been to the week before, he had an epiphany. As he says, “They don’t get to quit”, referring to a girl with Cystic Fibrosis he’d met at the fundraiser.

So he turned for Oahu, “Put his big boy pants on” and finished the race. He tells an inspiring story though and it’s the details that make it so. We’ll leave it for him to tell.
