Awesome, do they change the mainsail size or just the jib? Looks like big job to change.

It is no sail, more like a 2 part wing that they can orient depending of wind and direction.
They can go almost twice the wind speed...

And some....the other day they were doing 42 knots in 12 knots of wind from memory ! Madness.

R6 & NZ too dominant on the upwind leg again. Looking like it could be all over for Oracle now.

Oracle changed tacticians too (Slingsby in for the San Fran sailor) but Leg 3 is killing them.

Edit - apologies it was Ben Ainslie who was nominated tactician

Fantastic stuff from NZ, but would love to see the Yanks win a few,
but only because i want to see more of these cats in action.

Yeah, it's so one sided atm. Oracle must be feeling like the Wallabies vying for the bledisloe cup - no amount of pre game (race) talk or team changes make a lick of difference out on the paddock.

Better book those tickets for Auckland.

I too would love to see more racing ploppy but I just want us to get over the line first I still hold my breath every time they round the 3rd marker hoping like hell that they will not bury the nose again and cause some serious damage

This is a great place for catching up and it even does some live streaming

The live blog here is great when the racing is on......but very one sided as you might expect

That was just incredible. USA seem to have found something on the upwind. Bring on R9.

Dam that wind!!!! It was just starting to get interesting - at least we were in the lead so that should restore some confidence.

I'm hoping the next technological innovation is a canting rig. It's probably the main reason windsurfing held the speed record for so long; being able to lean into the breeze.

You'd think it should be possible. Have the mast stays adjustable via some sort of co-ordinated winch system that took up on one side as it let out on the other. Then you'd end up with something a little like the sail rocket.

Just watched race 8.That was so close to a capsize! It ain't over till it's over. NZ's second boat is apparently not flash. The US have an equivalent spare.

Can we have any discount if buy two same time ?
If you can supply the another one (NZ) I have perfect spot here on GC for every Sunday racing along Broadwater.
With this advantage over San Francisco that spectators could sit closer and on both sides of the channel.

If the culprit was hydraulics failure that prevent sails from flipping or exhausted crew, forgetting to crank hydraulic pumps ?

That is reminder what I said earlier about needs for modification of the concept of using exclusively human muscle to power control system ( or at storage in air compressed form)

You could put a spring on a tour de france bicycle that winds up when the rider goes downhill and releases going uphill to assist the rider but it is not in the spirit of the competition. The human element is just as important as the technology.

Well it's against the current rules, but nothing fundamentally wrong with regenerative braking being applied to human power? Tour de France riders don't use brakes much, so the weight of the device would negate them. America's cups are run on wind and hamburger power. There's already a bit of power accumulation allowed. Sails and fins flex in the gusts to give a bit back in the lulls, there's shock cord and springs, a small amount in the hydraulics. It's only the rule book that draws an arbitrary line. Maybe allowing 10 seconds of hydraulic accumulation rather than what looks like 1 second at the moment would help for sudden safety manoeuvres but still have the crew work hard upwind. Why don't they pedal the grinders? Against the rules?

R9 Well it's not over till it's over.... clever start tactics by USA and they were never matched. I wonder if the near capsiize in R8 is affecting the Kiwis mentally

Thats a kit of finger nails for me to bite into.......still a long way to go. But its better to have to win 2 than the amount Oracle need but I not feeling overly confident - not by a long shot. I remember when your lot was down 3-1 and came back!!!
