Do GW's make it that far north? Would probably suspect something else...but i guess we'll know in due course. Hope the guy recovers quickly.
Nothing wrong with a bit of culling when the need arises. It's a two way street - one of ours for a few of them.
My opinion against culling GWS isn't a secret, I'm not buying into that but my beef is the media calling it a GWS when they most likely had absolutely no credible info supporting the claim.
Within a couple of hours of it happening, with no reporter accessing the remote location and speaking to witnesses or the dude hurt they are trying to talk it up.
I'm smart enough to know my anti-culling arguement loses ground with each attack, but lets at least try establish the species responsible first.
Rant over, had a chick from a regional media office flat-out lie to me today in an attempt to extract info on something that happended yesterday. Not impressed.
So if we do something about it this time will that still be a knee jerk reaction?
If so, how long do we need to wait before it will be considered not to be?
And by 'something' I mean something even just a little bit effective as distinct from anything that might have been done so far, which is obviously totally ineffective.
Spent a couple of winters living at said place in mid 80's and virtually every day you surfed it was with several very good sized bronzies (I tink they were) swimming around - I'm surprised its taken this long for one to take a nip.
Small ones would chase bait fish into the shorebreak - get stuck on the beach then roll back out with the next wave.
Memories da da da da da of the way "things" were
"the man, known only as Camel, reportedly grabbed the 34 year old victim and pulled him on to his surfboard after the shark attack. "He had a big board and just dragged him in""He did really well""
The West Australian 29 aug 2012
well done
"the man, known only as Camel"
You would have to guess it was not a GW given the injuries described, also the fact that he had to fight it of would indicate it persisted after the first bite. Not normally a GW'ss amo and also a GW would have done a little more damage in first few bites.
Seems to fit the idea of less food in the ocean (fish) means more likely an attack. That and more people in the water also with the area involved it is surprising no one has been hit before.
Either way i hope he recovers alright
Camel is a well known Margie's surfer Jeff Goulden who charges hard.
Good onya Camel.
Do hope he makes a speedy recovery, thoughts go out to family friends and persons involved with such a remote rescue.
With out over alarming anyone more of a heads up TODAY the swell was pumping 4ft Plus and glassy, it was overcast at Sunsets Gero.
I SUPed flat out from 7.30am till 9.00am with 3 surfers early, whom left the water at 830 ish, another paddled out as did another super
At 9.00am whilst looking directly out to sea some 100m i spotted a huge fin , it was also seen by the other SUPer. (GWS) with out any doubt.
The 3 of us left the water
