'Britain's ethnicity' - not sure exactly what that is and it certainly isn't something that has been constant and now under pressure to be wiped out for the first time in history.

'white northern European' is a pretty broad brush, that would seem to be a description to suit your argument more than an actual ethnicity. Not much ethnic similarity between a Norse Scandinavian and a Catholic Norman or a Germanic Jew. All of them white and from northern Europe.

I do agree with the idea of assimilation; to the extent that there are two very definitive boundaries:
1. Immigrants should assimilate with society but not to the extent that their religious, moral, ethical beliefs are quashed or expected to be quashed.
2. Immigrants should not demand that their religious, moral and ethical beliefs are catered for within the society.

I think that it opens up a whole different discussion about Australians...

This question got asked of myself and my class mates when I was at school. I will always remember the silence that ensued after the answers were written on the board. We were asked - What makes someone Australian?

- Someone born in Australia
- Hard working
- Loves a laugh
- Swears
- Sticks up for him/herself
- Multicultural
- Loves sports
- Likes a beer

Whilst I'm a lot of people would read the list and agree, I'm sure a lot of international forum visitors would probably think that describes themselves in their respective countries (except perhaps the first). And I'm pretty sure the list (which was more exhaustive than this) wouldn't sit well with a lot of people; some 5-6-7th generation Australian's may not even be described within this context. If you can describe what an Australian is which describes every single Australian then you are doing well.

I don't pretend to think that I haven't had thoughts about what will become of Australia if the level of immigration is to (seemingly) continuously increase but I do think that a lot of us Aussies are short-sighted in our views of immigrants. What the media doesn't seem to portray is the level of nativity/ignorance within the countries the immigrants are coming from especially what constitutes legal and illegal immigration. On the flip side, we Australians can be pretty ignorant about the plight of some our newest arrivals and what goes on in their countries.

Do you have the answer? The government certainly doesn't. I don't but I reckon there are alternative means that could at least be trialled - perhaps working hand in hand with the countries, the consulates, advertising the illegality of people smuggling etc.

And one last thing - the history comment...
How about this one; name as many native American Indian tribes/districts as you can. Follow it up with naming as many aboriginal tribes/districts as you can.

Your idea that, "history is history" is so peurile, should the police stop investigating the Beaumont children abductions in Adelaide in the 1970's and then say to the family "you just need to suck it down, and move on" . Or how about those Jewish families exterminated in Auschwitz, they just need to " build a bridge and get over it". I know you want the world to be a simple place with simple solutions but it is not true that a new generation wipes clean the slate of history. The burdens(and blessings) of history are carried by subsequent generations. So what happened to your family shapes your world. That's why you find signs of social destruction in many parts of Aboriginal life. Can you see that?, can you see that conquered native peoples all around the world suffer similar fates, and to say that they need to get over it is insensitive and foolish. First of all, you're assuming that my ancestors are as racist as you are. I think if they could get their heads around global trade, mobile phones, free love, the internet, antibiotics, the birth control pill, votes for women, air travel and friends with benefits, then they'd probably be ok with people being a slightly different shade.....

The fact it has already happened in boroughs of london is only partially true in some boroughs and as pointed out already, you've redefined Northern Europe in a fairly self serving way.

Fact is that other countries have faster growing populations than we do (something you're ok with because you believe that Bill Gates is trying to sterilise poor people when he offers them vaccinations - something that is linked to smaller family sizes)
