Apart from the very cheap cost of the holiday, what is the appeal of Bali?
The Dept. of Foreign Affairs & Trade has only just dropped the rating for Bali from “Reconsider your need to travel” to “Exercise a high degree of caution about you're personal security at all times and monitor the media about possible new safety or security risks”!
This puts it in the same category as countries such as:-
Angola
Gabon
Israel, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank
Nicaragua
Sierra Leone
Some of the above countries still have serious civil unrest and waring factions.
Add to this the fact that members of the Indonesian junta have huge stakes in the hotel and “entertainment” industries in Bali and are also responsible for horrific human rights abuses and genocide, are you comfortable funding this regime?
As well as rampant bribery, high risk of theft and rabies.
So, what is the appeal of a cheap holiday in a third world country?
Don't forget to add gridlock traffic between 10am-7pm , aggro in the water (anyone heard from SUP Pete recently?) and the consistent samples of "fecal matter" in water samples from Ulus as per ABC Compass last Monday.
Real shame but thats what 2.5 million visitors PA and no infrastructure will do to paradise.
That's why we're off to Cocos in July.
Weighed it all up after hearing from others about their Bali experiences.
Still get duty free, and far less hassle.
just for one of these.....although these days I am less inclined to head there due to a lot of what has been mentioned above
Yep a country less fortunate than ours, that we are trashing for our entertainment.
$1000 for a week in Bali ..... or same cost for 3 weeks at Gnaraloo. I know where I am going on holidays...
bali is fine , just don't stick to kuta . I'm off for 10 days in ubud in june/july in a secluded area and it's fantastic there
I surfed that spot in 1995 with 6 others out (2 who were my good mates) at head and a half high. One of the best days of my life. I still dream about it even now.
The worst thing about Bali is the Aussie Bogan.
I love Bali but avoid the spots where the Aussie Bogans hang out, I cringe when I hear them, and you can hear them a long way away.
Any race of people that have to put up with some of the trash that we send over there deserve a medal.
