I agree. Stay out of Kuta and explore! Go to Candi dasa in the east a little town on the beach. Lovely people and really close to lots of cultural things like old traditional balinese villages and temples like the water temple, beautiful rice paddies etc.
The main reason for me to go to Bali though:
Go to Bali don't go to gnarloo or any where else in nor west wa book your flights to Bali now gnarloo jakes etc are overrated and only work a few times a year.
Heavy locals ,urchin infested reef ,sharks , big hold downs ,and isolation don't go it's not worth it

Sounds like its pretty much over for em now with the water polution etc. Fecal count at Kuta is off the richter scale, traffic is obscene etc etc.
Not too sure what the future for the Balo's is but it aint gonna be good thats for certain. Guess we are partly to blame as its our playground
Still I got some great memories of the early days over there. Troppo zone, watchin the big rock fall over at bingin on a big tide when ya had to walk in there, epic days at green bowls, 2 stroke bikes that would inexplicably start in reverse Ah the glory days.

Bali is a great place has great waves fun people, and is an exceptionally cheap holiday. Try staying in a 5 star hotel in Perth for under $120 night!!!!! (try a backpackers )
The future for Bali - pretty bright I would say looking at the hotels being built and refurbished, the new airport, new resorts and the new rich RUSSIANS have discovered all of the above - yep a few of em even surf

as long as you can get airfares and accom (2 weeks) for less than a weekend at Rotto people will go
Yay for third world cess pools and our (fleeting) economic superiority...
Lets send our own tourism and service industries to the same places we sent our manufacturing ones...

I spend 4 weeks straight living in aircon comfort being feed and waited on while pretending to work hard for a big fat pay packet, with drinking myself stupid my only entertainment..
