So I finally gave in to curiosity and booked a cruise for the Mrs and myself.
I note there has been a staggering increase of passengers: cruisemarketwatch.com/growth/ ~21 million this year with 7% compounded growth.
I'm doing a Mediterranean cruise on this ship.

Other one is the Alaskan cruise. Brother just did this one. Had a ball, best ever he reckons.
Only one people complain about is anything off WA, to bouncy in Indian Ocean, even the cruise ship crews dont like it
Next door went with his wife and three sons, tried to get off at Broome due to them all suffering
did one when 8. heavy weather-most spent 3 days hurtin. loved it as a kid they had a padded room right up in the bow where you could ride the swell, felt like you could jump and touch the roof as the bow dropped in heavy seas

I remember Russians you to go on cruises during the Soviet days.
I couldn't imagine anything more mind numbing than a cruise.

I've heard very mixed reviews, and as usual it all depends on how much money you are willing to spend.
Glowing reviews from people that have been on similar ones to FlySurfer's. Rather than packing your bags and traveling every few days the hotel you are staying in moves around instead. It's super easy.
At the other end of the spectrum I have a colleague that is, frankly the biggest tight arse imagineable, so he took his family on one of the cruises that are not unlike a mega booze cruise.
First the kids got sick, which they first noticed at the dinner table when they projectile vomited all over the shop. Crew members in bio suits came in to clean it up. Then his wife became sick too leaving him practically alone on a boat for a few days (maybe a good thing).
They didn't make New Caledonia because of a cyclone.
Thinking he'd avoided the virus he started feeling queasy disembarking. By the time he was on the bus to the carpark it was all over rover and he had to push his way to the front to get out and spew. The next thing he remembers is waking up at home with the ambulance guy shining a light in his eyes and asking him if he knew where he was. He reckons his prostrate issues started after that.
The thing about cruise boats is there are constantly thousands of people on board a mostly enclosed, air-conditioned vessel. And when they get off a few thousand more immediately get on. They are breeding grounds for all sorts of exotic, microscopic life forms.

Close environment = good breeding ground for Gastro. There was a bad dose around last year.
Workmate got offloaded at Southern Italy with Gastro with no thank you/whatever - spent next couple of weeks in hospital. Look after yourself was the story.
Make sure that you get Insurance and that it covers this eventuality. Revised airfares, accommodation for partner, etc; or just make sure that you don't get sick.
Me - I could not think of anywhere worse than being stuck on a boat - take trackies for the weight gain!

Phew... Good thing I only booked a week, Mrs wanted to get it from Barcelona.
All of the above are reasons I too had dismissed cruises, but I was told new cruise ships are airy, you get your own room with a balcony, room service included; if you don't want to be exposed to other passengers... and we only travel by night so port stops are 9:00-18:00hrs.
I'm still not sure about all those drinks packages, aqua spa water packages... but my room is right at the back.
I couldn't justify a suite...

Flysurfer, just some advice for you.
If it's with Carnival Corporation and you see the captain running for the lifeboat,
trip him up and make sure you and the missus get there before him,
otherwise you might be left swimming ashore.
They had a bit of trouble recently when the capatain of the Costa Concordia was trying
to direct the 'abandon ship' operation from the dry comfort of the local pub,.
or something like that.
Gee,..that dining room looks just like the Spirit of Tasmania dining room doesn't.
What I like about the dining room is that with the correct view you get to see the horizon go up up up, and then watch the horizon go down down down..
I'm glad I don't get sea sick, but it was interesting watching people learn to walk when the seas are rough. Its like they/you take a step but don't actually put your foot down until the very last second as the boat is moving so much.
Anyway, I think cruises are fantastic. Its a great way to travel without traveling. If you like to drink, eat, even watch movies, there are heaps of things to do on board.
