I'm pushing 50, my son is pushing 20yo.

I'd like to initiate a father son holiday for a couple of weeks that we can share together, before we inevitably grow apart.

I am thinking about a motorcycle holiday through Vietnam with him next year. I know we would both love that.

I'm sure some of you wiser old blokes can shed some light on some other male bonding holiday ideas that you've done, or would like to do, with your son/s before they make their own lives.

Friends of mine have just finished planning a bike trip through America for a month and incorporating the Sturgis bike week.
The age of the group going ranges from 23 - 52y/o.
Everyone seems to be super keen.
So definately a bike trip is a great idea. Vietnam is awesome and beautiful. Biking it would be the best way to see it.

Vietnam is pretty busy, and I don't think it's very scenic... at least the south isn't.

How about Ayahuasca in the jungle... I spent 5 days, and I'm never forgetting them.
A lot of cultures use certain substances on late teens to "wake" them up... you know manhood rituals.

Seriously: indianmotorcycletours.com/
Himalayas on a Royal Enfield is my next tour.
I did a motorcycle tour around Peru in 2010... was good, but would have been better with more people, cos it was just 2 of us.

Diving Wolf Is. (Galapagos) was amazing.

in land south vietnam is nice but the north is absolutely fabulous. For motor biking I would say you have to hit Sapa a town in the mountains up north. I would recommend biking the north and go into Laos or China through the mountains.

Some tips for Vietnam:

- Danang is a place in the mountains in the south.
-Go to the cu chi tunnels. The tunnels the vietnamese dug under the battlefields to live in and to fight out of, against the Americans
- Go to mui ne for some kiting of windsurfing.
- Go to Na trang if you just want to laze on the beach for a bit in a pretty westernized city.
- Go to Hue. An old city with in the center the so called citadel.
- Hoi an is a beautiful old town which is completely world heritage because of its old colonial buildings.
- Hanoi is an old large city where you can see the 'real vietnam'
- Do a Halong bay cruise.
- Go to sapa, where all the hilltribes come together.

However for more bonding ideas:

- Wintersport in japan or NZ
- Do a diving course together.
- Hike to machu pichu or some other great hike.

Lot's of options mate. enjoy!

Im heading over to Europe and doing a motorbike ride with my old man from Germany through to Spain this June.

Checking out Aussie war cemeteries and Normandy.

He's over there at the moment started from Turkey and 4 days ago he was in Bulgaria bribing his way into Serbia

Not bad for a 62 year old

Going to be either bonding or separating...

+ 1, a totally awesome experience. No bullsh1t, bluff or bravado on the track, after a couple of days all that is stripped away. I had an awesome experience with mates up there, and it's been long enough now we have forgotten the pain and there is talk of going again.

You want to do Vietnam, send me a PM. one of my mates lives there now and does a lot of these for fellow Aussies. Not pretentious nor full of crap , just a great all round bloke, who knows this area very well.

Here here! I second that motion. I used to be flying in and out of PNG several times a year. and every time we went there we took a couple of blokes up to Kokoda and picked them up in Moresby a couple of weeks later to take 'em home. Would love to have done it myself, but alas, the queen always wanted her aeroplanes back.

As Mac said, Tassie Overland Track and/or Frenchman's Cap is a good idea. Get back to Hobart and have a think about "Doc's" option!

Otherwise, I would be more inclined to hit up North America on some Dual Sport Bikes... Cruise through The Rocky's... Easy to organise, accommodation everywhere. Check out Bend in Oregon where Gerry Lopez lives. Maybe order a custom! Alternate, get a Jeep / Dodge 4WD...

The other section of the world that would be an absolute blast on Dual Sports Bikes, or even a Jeep Wrangler... Central China, and follow the Yangtze upstream towards Tibet. Have a squizz on Google Earth/Maps... The roads look quite good, and the scenery looks amazing! Would need some planning, or a guide maybe... In the other direction, The Yangtze hits the Ocean at Shanghai.

I want an excuse for another holiday. It would be much more fun just going with him, rather than the doing the whole family thing.

If the holiday was all up to me - I'd go somewhere, far away from the hoi polloi, with a few mates. I'd kill stuff, drink beer, relax and contemplate.

I don't want no f'ckn environmental, pinko, patriotic, hard work holiday complete with wifi so I can update my current location on foursquare, change my profile pic on facebook or announce that the guy next to me is eating a biscuit on twitter.

I don't want to share a bowl of coke with him - in my experience that stuff is for high-brow knobs. Personally, I'd prefer to hook up some low grade trucky speed and see what happens.

Doing the father son thing I can explain it away, to my wife, as money well spent - ie: I'm bonding with my son, so what if it costs $8K for the week.

I'm sure he'd enjoy it too. I don't feel the need to tell him I love him - if he is a man, he would know that by now.

WTF man, so you're asking us for ideas and you're not going to create a blog, with holiday snaps and a google earth tracker, you un-social ba$tard

When I was in the Amazon jungle getting off and in to the planet... there was no running water, no electricity, no real food, no nothing, except Ayahuasca and 1 potato + 1 boiled egg a day, weird creature noises, and my thoughts.

My laptop ran out of juice after 2 movies, and my Cowon flac player lasted a while longer.

I had to wash in a brownish dry stream with I don't know what at the bottom and crap in an oil drum.
My hut had every type of insect you could image.
I didn't get bit by anything and I didn't take any malaria tabs.

I don't know how many kgs I lost but my clothes were lose when I left... I felt really great, but getting back to the city (Iquitos) was trippy, noisy, polluted and pretty unpleasant... and I was still kind of in shock (PTSD) from the DMT+Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (ayahuasca).

If you think you're man enough, you can try catching the boat from Pucallpa to Iquitos.
Plenty o'time to drink beer
This is no eco tour or hard slug... if you're even harder you can go further in to the Amazon towards Brazil.
And if you're a REAL hard man... you can swim it!
