No, actually I do understand that, GF. Maybe you're missing my point? From your own link - http://embryology.med.unsw.edu.au/Defect/page5a.htm - It says:

There is an interesting "American paradox" (see Abel ) that Americans have a relatively low rate of per capita alcohol consumption, yet the USA has the highest incidence of FAS (20 times all other countries) in the world.

Have a read of my earlier comments about "paradoxes". Also my comments about the European experience... I can't see where they have a huge car stealing bogan problem that's traceable back to brain damaged foetuses.

So what I'm saying is that without much stronger evidence, I'm pretty unconvinced. Certainly not enough to go looking down on young mothers who have an occasional drink.

And before anyone else comes along with the "there is medical evidence suggesting"... just remember, there is some medical evidence to suggest that flouride in the water may not always be a good thing. There is some medical evidence to suggest that immunisation could be a genuine risk. There is medical evidence to suggest all kinds of things could be a Bad Thing for all kinds of reasons. Doesn't mean we should stop doing them all.

Yes I read of the Yank paradox too.

Hard to know what's happening there. Those ill-informed may be hittin the sauce hard? Possibly there is little known about FAS by the public in the US, and so exactly those you have mentioned - women that normally don't drink heavily, but like the occasional or single daily drink - have been doing the damage?

The scary thing for Oz is we have a higher average grog intake than yanks and are amongst the highest drinkers in the world.

Sobering.

Bloody stats eh?

Seriously, 1 in 5 Australians addicted to alcohol in their lifetime? You honestly believe that?

1 in 5 Australians regularly (even on a daily basis) drinking alcohol because they enjoy it and don't see their level consumption as being a health concern I could accept. But addicted? They've got to be kidding.
