Estimates please... scale rulers and calculators are permitted.
The photographic angle is about 10 degrees looking down. Actually closer to 8... Not that is really matters...
This one at Winki - how big is the face of the wave? Guy taking off is in crouch stance.
Bells is hard to judge in this photo....

id say 8 - 10 ? but you dont really no till you are in it

Never understood why surfers measure the wave from the back? What the f@# is the point...you never look at a wave from the back when you have any scale reference to judge its size from, IE a person, so what the hell? Weirdos ^_^
As an example, it's stated above the wave is ~ 10-12 foot - sufer scale...so that's 2 average people tall. If you asked anyone, who isn't a sufer, whether that wave was 2 people tall I expect the average response would be "you taking the piss?".

Another way is to track a solid parcel of water free falling from the lip. 1 second = 5 metres, 1.5 seconds just over 10 metres, I've seen 1 second waves around here. Those look bigger. I'll go 8 metres.
I was standing right next to Steve Ryan as he took this photo. 1st photo. My photo, 2nd one, is a split second after, shooting on the wife's Slim Line Pocket Camera (My Medium Zoom Olympus needs a new Olympus rechargeable battery). Steve was shooting on a Pro Bazooka Lens. Same angle, same wave.... Different moment, different crop.
Steve Ryan's photo was posted on Coastalwatch.com.au
Enjoy it again !
A spike in swell saw some sizable sets rolling in along Victoria's Surf Coast yesterday. As Darren Wilcox bottom turns off this bomb, you've got to wonder what the two surfers paddling over it are staring at... Photo: Steve Ryan.
NOTE: I previously reported the surfer as probably being T-Ray (Tony Ray).
Big enough for me not to go out... I went to cathedral and was soiling my wetty and paddled for tassie a few times so I couldn't imagine how big it was out there Funny how it was the older blokes that were charging :)
Bloody big i'd say. The point Nepean swell bouy just down the coast near the heads had maximum wave heights (its a couple of k's offshore) of 8m +. I guess they would be using a standard measurement reference - peak to trough.
This pic was from the Geelong advertiser - are these 2 guys near the winki button? If so thats pretty heavy
last time i saw winki that big, the crew called it 10 to 12 foot, in laymans terms FRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGNNNNNN BIG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
