Why did I just do this? There's nothing good to add. Don't tell me Plex, the on-the-fly encoding is too slow to work. Weather? RSS feeds? XMBC? There's no feature I don't already have, and it just seems like a collection of garbage apps.

What am I missing, because jailbroken ATV2s go for $300 on eBay?

Doc, did you ever get that SUP paddle back? The paddle that you used to clobber the crab with? Or do you think the crabs just nicked it as revenge for their buddy after you stupidly left it behind?

some dude from shellharbour council took it, some try hard surfer with a chip on his shoulder and a bee in his bonnet about me taking off deeper out the island than him on my sup and an exception to me calling him shoulders... (cause he only took off on the shoulders...get it...?)

old guy walking his dog saw it..

we reported it, old dude took down the council car rego

never got the paddle back, but last I heard, council dude lost his thirty grand a year lawn mowing job

...and as far as I know, the crab lives to see many another days

Don't worry the apple thought police will be along shortly to readjust your "steve jobs apple device owner aura". Things will be back to normal in no time.

I got a wdtv live streaming media player, just as cheap, but with the difference that I don't have to be tethered to itunes, and I can stream everything off my NAS easy peasy, and it plays 1080p stuff fine

This is the part where you try to convince me to watch a video about how to think.

(Only slightly off topic this time )

I'm pretty keen for the iPhone5. I have the "4", and my contract is ready for renewal.

People talk highly of the Samsung, but I had a touch screen Samsung just before they became "smart", and it was one of the worst phones I have ever owned.

Brainwashin/fashion aside: The Apple TV is a slick little unit. I've seen a few of those Western Digital hard drives with their built in GUI, and they are kinda shyte. Get a demo of a ATV one day if you haven't already seen. Search > Play. Like that. And it's HD with 5.1 Dolby. I've got an average internet connection and there is absolutely no lag.

Reason I ask about jailbreaking them is a cabbie offered to buy mine off me for $150, because it was an older ATV2 model and you can't jailbreak the new (full HD) ATV3 ones. You can't buy the ATV2s anymore, thus they sell for $250+ on ebay (check it out).

He has a business on the side jailbreaking and installing them for people who want to watch overseas television stations and the like. While I was on the 20 minute ride he got two calls. He doesn't advertise.

Soooo, I jailbroke mine and I'm nonplussed. Perhaps I'm missing something but all the 3rd party apps are very average. I guess the biggest feature is streaming from a NAS, but, PLEX transcodes so slowly I find it is useless. On demand HD + 5.1 from the store, for $6, is so much better. I'm not that povo. Music is obviously better through the Apple apps.

I can kinda see why the jailbroken ones with NitroTV et al installed go for a bit, because the average punter isn't going to be too comfortable SSH'ing to the unit to enter terminal commands, get packages and the like. It was an interesting exercise, but I still think perhaps worthless.
_______

Fun fact: Apple now make more revenue from the iPhone alone than Microsoft does from all of its product lines put together; 22B vs 17B.

Nah, apple products aren't gay. The hardware is fantastic. I also appreciate the fact that the computer operating system is built on bsd.

I'd agree that iTunes is very gay and so is charging developers to make apps - that's pretty gay. Objective C is gay.

Actually I called Apple support the other day. Little glitch that just ended up requiring a restart.

BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!

Seriously. The girl IN AMERICA was totally charming. And completely helpful. I mean a real, live American. And she recognised that I kinda knew what I was doing. And she didn't read from a script. 'd have asked her out if I wasn't married and on the other side of the world.

Optus vs Apple

The thing is I didn't even buy my phone from Apple I bought it from Optus. Optus offered to loan me a ****ty replacement phone while they fixed mine over 4-5 weeks.

Apple, on the other hand, if it hadn't been a simple fix, told me to just walk into any store and they'd move the data to a brand new phone. No questions asked.

Apple's level of customer service is in no way "gay". It's fantastic and I wish every other company was half as good. I'd even say it's perfect. It's American service.

AAPL Recommendation: Buy.

Can you take your Samsung/Google/Nokia into a store and get a replacement, including moving all your data to the replacement, for free, on-the-spot, no questions asked? Even if you didn't buy it from their store?

...and an AppleTV is like $100. I've spent more on a round of drinks.

People seem to think it's advertising. There is barely any advertising. It's the quality and design of everything they make.

In no ****ing way am I going to line up for one of their products, but from an objective point of view, after owning and using them for a few years, they really are **** hot.

...Now, what, exactly, is so unreal about XMBC, that I also have running? PLEX sucks. I had to play opening ceremony over standard apple app, that ran flawlessly. Plex was unwatchable.

LOL
Go all the way to a shop!
That's sooooo funny...

Should I have a technical difficulty (hasn't happened yet) I have xda-developers, with in 3 mins I'd have an answer/detailed instructions/program do it for me.
Including an un-bricking solutions after a bad flash... can you flash custom firmwares on the iPhone?

^ Never had an issue requiring me to replace/repair a phone which in it's self is pretty amazing.

I'm not sure why anyone would buy a device that locks you in to using one "ecosystem" and doesn't let you take your content with you when you leave to another platform - the sheep they are multiplying

Simondo - if your "invested" in the apple ecosystem there's no point changing, if your current phone does what you need there's no point changing, you also need to read the TOS of all the current smartphone OS and content providers - you'll be surprised. If you really need a phone that only fits in MC Hammer's pants by all means get an andriod device - but get the google nexus device not an "OEM" branded one as there the only ones that really get proper support through there lifespan.
