Okay, it's that time of the year again, starting to get a bit cooler outside so in the little f#ckers come. Any advice to prove my ability to keep the home safe (ha ha) to the 3 girls (1mum, 2daughters) I share the home with would be appreciated! The dog kills everything except rodents, HELP?

Yep cats are awesome!

Our cat used to bring in fresh caught rats and mice at night and drop them on your pillow and start yowling till you woke up and gave him a pat.

It was kinda like the horse head scene in the god father each night

Mice traps and ultrasonic anti rodent http://www.amazon.com/Victor-M753-PestChaser-Ultrasonic-Repellent/dp/B000FZ1KC2. (example (jcar sells them)

I cant stress the amount of damage that rodentents (namely Fire earth leakage list goes shorts): rats and mice can do to electrical connections and insulation and property. You should address this issuse as soon as possiable The answer is nothing short of Erradication.

I live on an acreage in the bush and have the same problem. Go to a local produce place. They sell rat/mice baits in block form. All I do is lift the manhole cover for the houses roof space and throw a handful up there. Believe me they will find them.

If you need to put them in the liveing areas, you can get purpose made containers for the blocks or just get a chinese container, clip the lid on and cut a mouse hole in one side and put your blocks inside and put in a discreet place.

Good old mouse traps works fine. Put a bit of ham or bacon on the lever and tie it down with string. Next morning a dead mouse.

Going round the house and try to block up where they are getting in is the best prevention.

Snakes don't eat enough to keep up with an infestation.

But you have to admire the ingenious little blighters. I tried a humane mouse trap

But if you only take them to the neighbour's back fence they find their way back. And then they learn! How they can get a piece of cheese from the top end of this trap and escape, leaving behind a sprung, baitless trap, is beyond me.

^^^^^^I think he wants to get rid of the mice, not build them an adventure playground.

I get the place inspected and treated annually for general pests. The two I can't control is ants and mice. Ants I can live with as long as they stay out of the kitchen and anyway they protect the place from termites.

The pest control guys tell me plain old snap traps are the best way to control mice. Bait them with nice, fresh peanut butter, the oilier the better so cheaper gluey stuff is best. They love the stuff and they can't just grab it and run. Very effective.

Just finished abusing telstra for a crap phone service,
Finally had a technician come out,...... only to find it was the damn mice.

yep, toothy little peckers keep chewing through our land line terminus,
they must be doing well as some are the size of large rats!

gonna use the old cinder block on a rope, .... dropped from great height,
with a sausage roll for bait, (gets at least 3-4 at a go :)

the greased or rotating stick over a bin of water works extremely well also,
Easily catches and kills 10-30 in a weekend,
great for outdoors,
get em before they move in !

Well I suppose that's better than drowning them. Even though they are small they are quite complex, caring, sharing and emotional little fellows. Not far behind rats. Rats along with Rhesus monkeys are the only species apart from ourselves that are known to be capable of metacognition.

Please move them along with care.

I used to give them to a friend who breeds snakes, But we are so overrun by rodents,
he has a freezer full......... What else can you do?
I'm not quite hungry enough to eat them myself !

I do hope most of you realise that mice/rat poo is toxic to dogs. and If ingested can make them ill, or even kill them.
As mice poo everywhere, (Including their own bed)..... And dogs eat anything from anywhere, (its a real problem)
Thus I need to keep a lid on it, ( for my best mates sake)

Although any suggestions about what to do with them
would be gratefully accepted

I think you just answered his question.
Go and grab a couple of carpet pythons let them run free around the house and in the roof and voila!, no more mice.
you might have a snake problem though

I have no connection to this mob whatsoever! Try these out

http://www.nooski.com/products.html

I got tired of the little metal tab being licked clean everynight so I went to Bunnings and got the most expensive trap on the shelf... a whole $10.

I basically uses castrating rings and the ring ends up around the mouse's neck. Probably not the most humane trap but if I know there is a mouse about it'll be caught within 24 hours on the Nooski.

I took a photo of the first mouse I caught with it because I was completly blown away. Was gonna post it but thought it would be inappropriate.

Cheers

I used the same idea as this last year. All I did though was fill the bottom of the bin with water and throw some food on top of the water. Had seven the next day.

I used to have chooks and they attracted an infestation of the little ****ers.

No way a feel good trap was going to cut the mustard so I just baited the **** out of the house and although it took a couple of months of sustaine baiting, it got rid of them all.
problem solved.

Cat.

We have one that kills everthing up to large rat size. Had three rats in one night last week.

Nature's design to keep the rodent population in balance.
