thats rite, i got my first second hand old car.

Its a 1978 ford falcon station wagon, V6 6 cylinder, 4.1 liters and well she's a babe

Its not exaclty looking the best it has in its life, but i love old cars, and this is a great project for me to do up, and spend way to much money on

I think the best word i can think of is, "potential" potential to look great!

So as you may or may not know i like playing around on the web, and i have made on my blog a special section for my restoration project, so if your interested in checking out my progress with making her beautiful again!

here is a few photos,

Nice set of free Wheels Jordo but here's a tip...don't spend money on it.
Appreciate the old girl for what she is and don't even attempt to 'do her up'.

If you really feel the need to spend money on her just do mechanical repairs.
As a minimum, you should change her belts, hoses and all her fluids.
While you're at it, think about changing the timing belt (or chain), water pump, radiator, battery and alternator brushes.

Really consider all the thing that are going to leave you stranded on the side of the road and leave the Mag wheels and a subwoofers to the japanese import crowd.

Drive a bomb and be proud
Save your money for windsurfing kit and girls.

I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't have overhead cams, so that would not be necessary as there isn't a timing belt/chain. But then again, I don't know those falcons very well or at all, so just a suggestion

Nice one Jordo.Love the old fords. But listen to knotboard on this one.
Your biggest expense with that baby is gunna be petrol. The rest of the car will rust away before your eyes.. Looks like it has a headstart already.Considering where it will be parked most of the time...... at the beach

The old green limo i bought for fifty bucks and drove across the country 4 times
I don't think i spent more than a cupla hundred bucks to keep her going for about 5 years... Rust got to her in the end
All spare cash should be spent on windsurf gear. Cars are to get you to the beach and back.

Thanks. Thats basically the plan, Get everything that will keep it running fixed, and than when i get a little extra cash, fix the rust holes, But i am kind of luckey because i know people in all sides of the industry, Mechanics, Auto electritions, panel beaters, spray painters, etc etc, so that gives me a head start,

I never think im going to make her look as good as new, But I need to fix the major rust holes so as tstribo said, it does rust away to quick,

but yeah, i couldnt agree with you more on that,,

oops

Good pick-up Nikita, the XC came out with the 250 cross-flow, which of course is a push rod engine.

Jordo, there seems to be one minor thing missing ..... a towbar.

You'll need this to tow around a trailer full of jerry cans full of fuel just to get from Melville to Woodies

Your first car should be used for figuring out:

1) When the engine is low on oil, it makes a nasty ticking sound, and the oil light comes on when you go around right hand corners
2) Engines need water to run
3) How much damage your first crash can cause...

At least that's how it was for me!

Don't bother doing it up, if you want a nice looking car then save your pennies now, and buy one that someone else has done up.

I would focus all my spending on the cooling system thos cross flow heads tende to get cross and stop flowing. .
I would love to drive something with a wind down back window tho.
We used to sit in the back of ours with half the body out the back, then have to duck in and hold your nose as you passed though Coogee beach ( thats woodies to you young uns) when it was all skin drying sheds

What are ya talking about? My old XC only used about $5.00 worth of juice to get us to the beach and back, and that was about a 150-200kms round trip... mind you I was a bit younger and slimmer back then.

PS Get a bench seat in the front, if it hasn't got one already... it gives ya somewhere to put ya fish'n'chips while ya eat em on the way home.

Ahh i miss the bench seat in the old falcon. The Gf is soo far away with bucket seats .

Landyacht those old iron head cross flows can run so hot you could cook steak and eggs in the rocker cover and poor a boiling cup of tea from the radiator well before they give up the ghost.

Steak goes better on the exhaust manifold, the rocker cover is good for roast chickens though.

I think Ive got the pie warmer attachment from my old slant 6 in the shed somewhere, it worked great as long as the rocker cover gasket didnt blow( which it did with great regularity)

Ahhh, I hate to be technical, but even push rod engines have cams, and in this particular case its fed from a timing chain, not a timing gear like some other push rod engines.

Having said that, I think a timing chain failure on these types of engines is pretty unlikely. It would more likely just stretch slowly and last another 400k kms. Changing one of these would probably not be worth the effort involved, and where do you stop?

Its sort of funny with some modern cars needing timing belt changes at less than 60k kms or you can run the risk of it breaking and expensive damage resulting. To make it worse these same engines often have a strange setup where you have to remove a lot of stuff just to change the belt.

Jordo, just do as everyone else has said and replace the fluids and fan belt(s). Once you start fixing minor problems you can end up finding other problems that you want to fix...

Jordo, don't waste good money on an old car, just drive it into the ground

I spent multiple times what my 86' (good year that!) VL Commo (and that's a half decent car too) just getting it running

In the 3-4 yrs I had it did:
-Air intake
-Computer chip air intake
-Gear box
-I crashed it and did steering damage
-Immobiliser broke

Hey mate,

Go the XC wagons! I have one, it's the **** brown+metallic, with cream vinyl inside, same engine as yours.

It's classic how much gear you will be able to fit inside there, enjoi the cruise

Thanks
Matt
