Have not seen a poll for a bit!
After all that has been said, who believes there should be a cull of the GWS a simple yes or no?
sounds good to me- then we can go back to "state of origin" matches and watch you VFL fellas cringe
never really have liked the over the top AFL, much prefered "local" footy.
even suburban games with real amateurs [wot work propa jobs to pay the bills] are better than spoilt AFL princesses

Yes, if a human eater
It's really hard to single them out mate ......don't be difficult yes or no please!
Yes, if they are in the area of an attack.
The trouble with yes and no answers is that they can then be used to justify an action which is easily shown to be inappropriate.
I don't know. If there is one how would they do it?
I like the tag and siren idea
So is that a yes or a no?
One bark for no, two barks for yes.
And why have you left your doggie unattended in the dog pound?
Definitly No to culling...
but a big Yes for the combination of PaddlePig's idea (which I posted the same on another thread) and the author's tag/siren system.
Make it legal to fish for GWs again with bag/size limits. As most fishos won't keep them but want to catch them for the 'sport' - make it compulsory that if a GW is caught, it has to be tagged with a device that works on southace's system. Pretty soon, most rogue sharks close to land will have electronic tags and send off sirens...the downside to this is that we'll know when nearly 'every' GW shark is in proximity of our beaches...the siren might go off more than you think guys!
True true Sailhack.
I'm not 100% pro cull, but if you want a straight up yes or no answer then I fall onto the yes side of the fence. I haven't always held that opinion though.
Just in addition to my comments - I live in Vic, which is very low in shark attacks and possibly has bearing on my decision not to cull. I sympathise for those who have lost friends and didn't want to come across as insensitive. Although GWs do migrate - I can appreciate those living in 'hotspots' wanting to cull and wouldn't be adverse to culling if it was in those specific areas in order to make the beaches safe.
I know it sounds hypocritical as I'm against culling in general - but I doubt the GW population would be largely affected by 'targeted' culls in some areas. My only concern is that as soon as culling gets the green light - it opens up to making it happen along the entire coastline - which wouldn't be ok by me.
The moment the sharks leave the water and start attacking the people ON THE BEACH shoot them then........without hesitation.
If they are still in the water (their domain) leave them alone.... Yes tag and track for research but NOT kill.
From what I can gather.
1. The GWS move about a lot
2. There's no evidence that any single shark has developed a taste for humans and become a repeat offender
Therefore attacks are due to chance encounters.
To reduce the incidence of chance encounter by 50% you either reduce the number of swimmers by 50% or the global shark population by 50%
There's 3,500 GWS according to Wikipeadi, conservation status is vulnerable.
Cull 1,750 vulnerable GWS to reduce the toll by 50%
No
If you can't handle the current low probability of getting bitten don't go in the water.

Spot on. Further to the point, surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers + divers etc should be the only ones whos opinion counts (water users in general, not land lubbers or sailors)
