When there's not enough wind for sailing and it's not raining this stops me getting too bored. It all fits on/in the car and takes about 30 minutes to set up/ pack up. Environmentally friendly, I've flown for over two hours on less than a litre of fuel.
This is a few flights with a couple of friends thrown in so I don't hog the whole vid, hope you like.....

Thanks
Does the neck get sore holding the helmet at a tilt back angle to give you good vision?
How high are you permitted to fly, and do you use a chute?

Yeah, getting a neck like an F1 driver. No it's not a problem, if it's starting to get hard to hold up I'll just look up now and then to see what's ahead traffic wise and fly by feel. Usually after 2 or 3 hours I've had enough anyway.
Our legal max height is 10,000 ft but closer to the big air ports it's restricted to lower levels to allow for airliners flight paths. South of Rockingham is 6,000 ft as it is with all other GA aircraft.
Temperature drops 3 degrees every 1000ft so today at 16c it would be -2c at 6000ft and for an hour or two you freeze your hands and nose off.
Yep, that's not my gut, it's a chute. I don't plan on ever using it but it's nice to know it's there.
Happy to answer any questions.

Do you carry any VHF radio ? And if so, do you listen out on the area frequency ?

Ah, you must know a bit about this. A VHF radio is required now for even hanggliders if flown within ten miles of an airport with a control tower in the same airspace as GA aircraft use so I stay out of these areas now as I don't carry one. There are some exemptions being made for us now.
The only time I come close to other aircraft is when they come over to see what the hell I am and give each other a friendly wave.

Hi mate,

Do you do much soaring around Geraldton, I'm booked in for my HG course in September and thought i'd bring the glider as well when we come over sailing in December. Where hoping to spend Dec-March sailing in Gero and doing a little flying on the side.

BTW how do you reckon a tandam wing would go being powered to allow for flat land take off's? I have just never seen anyone using a footlaunched tandam PHG before. Vikki and i are both light weight's, combined mass 125 kg, whats your thoughts???

G'day Marty,
Where are you doing your course? I've been up there a couple of times with the HG and there is some great flying sites at Gero and the local pilots are very friendly and love to help out newbies, definitely take your glider.
Just food for thought, the largest gathering of HGs during the year is at Shellys Beach at Albany from Xmas onwards for two weeks. If I was driving over I'd spend a week there then keep going to Marges for the wavesailing and up to Gero.
Here's a vid of Albany over Xmas where it's flyable most days and easy to clock up big hours fast, if anyone wants to go for a tandem flight it's the place to go;

I've never heard of a tandem powered flight with a harness like mine, that is the realm of trikes. You wouldn't want to be a light person with a powered harness on a tandem glider, you won't be able to turn it. I fly mine with a Moyes Sonic 190vg and I'm 90 kgs and there is not much power to spare, 125 kgs wouldn't get off the ground in one no matter what size the wing, they're only a 120 cc gokart engine that puts out a massive 14 hp.
This link www.hanggliding.org/ is the best place to find out anything about hanggliding, besides your instructor.
Your in for treat Marty.

Cheers Mate,

Great vid, your idea of a Shelley Beach stop off looks very inviting on the way through to Gero.

Where are you based??

Course starts Sep 24 and I can't wait.. Looks like Hg will be a great sub 20Knt fill in before the sailing gets good. What sort of wind speed do you generally look for in the forecast over there to pridict good flying conditions??

I'm based in Rockingham, about 50 km south of perth.
This link siteguide.org.au/siteguidemap.html pretty much gives all the main sites in Oz and all you need to know about wind directions. For Gero the main ones would be Waszza's knob, Mt. Rennie, City views and Harrocks beach. 15 knts + is ideal for ridge soaring or dune gooning and Gero has most directions covered with some good novice hills.
Yeah, I've got a few weeks before I can fly to, broke my damn leg yesterday wavesailing.

Guys I came across your post and was wondering about this HG course in September you mention. I'd like to get back in the hanggliding, but should really do a course again. I'm based in WA. Any info you have would be great.

G'day Olerox,
Your best bet would be to give Mike Duffy from Leading edge hanggliding centre a call on o4o2 o2oo98 who is from Perth and top guy. He has given me a ton of good advice during and after my course, I'm sure he'd be happy to get you flying again. The course Marty is doing is in Vic, you may get away with just doing a check flight and joining the HGFA.
There is a good chance there will be people flying at south Cott tomorrow if it's not too wet, may go for a look myself,
Grant.
