Sea Shepherd 'Black Sea' Charity Fund Raiser

19 February 2009 6:30pm Hilton Hotel, Brisbane

If you have not already bought your tickets for this special event - you only have 4 days left!

Why 'Black Sea'? This is to signify that these are dark times for the oceans; fishermen continue to trawl for the last Bluefin tuna, stringing out thousands of kilometres of longline, indiscriminately killing marine and bird life; hundreds of millions of sharks are dying in the name of shark-fin soup; bottlenose dolphins are again being murdered in the waters of Taiji, Japan; Faeroe islanders slaughter pilot whales in what they regard as a right of passage and Japanese whalers demonstrate extreme desperation in their quest to kill whales in a dedicated whale sanctuary by ramming and sinking the Ady Gil, Sea Shepherd's wave piercing trimaran.

Mr. Ady Gil, Hollywood Audio Visual Director and sponsor behind the vessel bearing his name, has accepted our invitation to come to Brisbane and share his passion for marine conservation. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Come and join us for a night of fun, information and entertainment
~ Guest speakers;

Ady Gil - sponsor of the ill-fated trimaran
Wayne Poole, international business development manager, Australia Zoo
Dave Rastovich, pro-surfer & founder of Surfers for Cetaceans
~ MC - Tracy-Lynne Geysen, Animal rights lawyer and founder of BLEATS (www.bleats.com.au)

~ Music will be provided by Low Pressure System and Greg Sheehan

~ More than $20,000 worth of great auction prizes will be looking for a new home, including;

* A one-off Sea Shepherd surfboard by Gary McNeill to be signed on the night by Dave 'Rasta' Rastovich
* Surfboard signed by Andy Irons, Mark Occhilupo, Taj Burrows and Joel Parkinson

Safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately balanced ocean ecosystems and ensuring their survival for future generations

Nothing subtle about the Jap whalers tho (Ooh I said Jap, please dont be offended)

I wonder how much it costs the Sea Shepherd to operate? Must be in the millions!

They are a political lobby group.
Much like Greenpeace or Friends of the Earth.
Mainly funded by donations, although major contributors are not listed on their website.
With all those ships and helicopters, it must take quite a bit of cash to keep them going.
Not sure that this forum is the place for political spruking and advertising, but I do support some of what they do.

I'm all for protecting the environment etc

But seriously, you would have to be stupid to give your money to a bunch of braindead monkeys who manage to get their high-performance wave-piercing trimaran rammed by a massive slow whaling boat. Nothing wrong with protesting or demonstrating against people you disagree with (and for sure its a good cause), but as far as I'm concerned all the Sea Shepherd organisation has managed to demonstrate in their latest exploits is their own incompetance

Yea I think what they do is good in a way. Just think tho, if they spent that money taking the Japanese government to court and tie them up in legal crap and meanwhile the whales swim free, just a thought. Dunno its a hard one..

^ Somewhat agree Doggie, but going to court is no where near as much fun as piracy on the high seas. Firing hi pressure water canons and shooting rotten eggs at the japanese or sitting in a courtroom in the Hague - it's a no brainer. And to think the people who would make a lot of money from going to court would be the lawyers who then could then spend all their hard earned money on more sushi & fur coats & leather goods

PS - Just wondering, does anyone know whether several thousand litres of biodiesel would be environmentally bad for marine life?

PPS - Swoosh, those whaling boats appear to be able to get some serious pace about them.

PPPS - All this has got me wanting a big serve of sushi too.

Lol just because it says bio dosnt mean it wont hurt the fishies

Maybe they could go to court and and throw eggs at each other, wouldnt be as dangerous

Have you seen the speed they get up to when they chase whales and other boats, I recon 25-30kn, the Ady Gil was dead in the water with the big boat aproching, if they were at full tilt it would have been hard to get away from even in the bat boat!

Donations maybe, but not enough from the general public to fund their "Eco Terrorism", but maybe just enough to pull the con job that it is something that real people believe in.

If one was able to follow the money trail, I am sure it would lead to a most surprising scource. Maybe a group of multinationals, maybe the Bilderbergers or even as they may be declaring themselves a non profit .org, a government???

I seriously doubt their real agenda is saving whales.

I read this post earlier but didn't bother reading the poster up top.
I just read it. It says;

"With the sinking of our vessel the Ady Gil by the Japanese whaling fleet, Sea Shepherd have received more media attention than any other campaign. The whalers are more desperate and vindictive than ever. What little support they have is disappearing to the bottom of the Antarctic Ocean, along with their profits, to join the Ady Gil."

What a load of rubbish!

What sort of idiot would sacrifice such a great boat and risk his crew's lives for a bit of publicity?
Did the skipper really think he could get in the path of a boat that big and call right of way?
Would a windsurfer play around in the path of the Rottnest ferry and then call right of way?
Would anyone be surprised if he did and then got run over?

Was this poster written by Sadam Husseins propaganda department?.
They had the remarkable ability to have the crap kicked out of them and then report it as a stunning victory.

And now they are asking for more donations so they can maybe buy a replacement.
No way!
I don't agree at all with the Japanese whaling program but giving money to be wasted like this is complete stupidity.

They are right when they say Sea Shepherd has received more publicity than any other campaign.
But it is BAD publicity which I believe has seriously eroded their support.

The above quote should more accurately be written;

"..... The anti whalers are more desperate and vindictive than ever. What little support they have is disappearing to the bottom of the Antarctic Ocean, along with their profits, to join the Ady Gil."

There ya go guys. Just one small word addition and now it's all sweet!

Looks like KRudd is gonna take em to court and throw eggs at em -

Kevin Rudd has set Japan a deadline of November to cease whaling in the Southern Ocean or face international legal action.

The government has been criticised for failing to honour an election promise, made more than two years ago, to take Japan to court over its whaling operations.

The prime minister said Australia was pursuing Japan through diplomatic means.

"If that fails, then we will initiate court action before the commencement of the whaling season in November 2010," he told the Seven Network on Friday.

Japan and Australia were long-standing economic friends.

"But that's the bottom line and we're very clear to the Japanese, that's what we intend to do."

When they say S4C, do they mean the Welsh language TV channel Sianel Pedwar Cymru will be there ?

Do I get to meet the cast of Pobol-y-Cwm if I attend ?

And why would a bunch of welsh valley folk be in Brisbane tonight anyway ?, surely with Newport vs Cardiff and Llanelli vs Bargoed tomorrow they would want to be home ??

^ You guys need to spend more time in the ocean.

Sea Shepherd are pestering the hell out of the Japanese, who are commercially whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

I'm nowhere near brissy, but have got no problem with the shepherd spamming up seabreeze. Good cause.

What a hyprocrite Garrett is. He joined the enemy by becoming a politician.

lets get one thing straight.

Is it an ecological issue or a moral one?

Cos Minke whales are NOT endangered.
And if its a moral one (which it must be) how would you feel about Hindus running a "save the cow" concert, and ramming cattle trucks here, etc etc

I really do admire Paul Whatshisname's dedication and drive but I dont quite get what Sea Shephard is basing their outrage on?

Ady Gil can be seen quite clearly with its engines in forward pushing into the path of the whaler-look at the footage. To me as a skipper of 25 years seagoing experience the Ady Gil seems to be sitting stationary til last moment and gunning into their path. The whaler is a couple of hundred tonnes of steel and couldnt possibly avoid the intention. Probably didnt really care either.

Be aware also that while its said that whaling is going on in "Australian" waters-the only countries that recognize it as such are the other 4 that claim territorial waters down there. This will come out when (if?) KRudd takes them to the international court. Its also why he doesnt want to do it.
