Bottom line I know CO2 added to the atmosphere affects the ability of the atmosphere to absorb heat from the sun. That is a big part of why there is life on earth!!!
I did a Geology / Oceanography degree in the late 70's and we covered heaps of information inter-related to this - but at the time global warming was not one of the key issues. Ocean uptake - thermal patterns - circulation - atmosphere - biology - reefs - CCD (Carbon compensation Depth) - linked to skeletal remains found in Geological records (part of looking for Oil - The massive amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere (relative to now) during the geological era when most of the current COAL and OIL reserves were created - yarda yarda yarda...
And nature most often has an influence which makes our efforts look puny....
When K. Dud [}:)] was trying to push thru' his attempt at CO2 legislation. There was a doco' on TV. It covered natural and man-made bushfire which occurs seasonally in North Qld and likely places further West - but this focussed on N.Qld.
The research had identified that the annual CO2 donation swamped (factor of 4+ I recall but not 100% on factor) all of the Australian man-made CO2 - cars - power stations - industry - the lot. They were researching the viability of cutting this CO2 generation to a 1/3rd of current levels from the impact of fire in the bush - if they could successfully manage the burn-off early in the season instead of late - this was due to the lower fuel levels. - I hope they suceed at some level as this would be a "lay-down mesaire" (spelling??) method of meeting our goals as a nation.
As for doing nothing our-selves - not an option - go live in a polluted city for awhile - it is foul (control CO2 - and alot of the associated poluion will be clean-up too)- hardly any of OZ is exposed to this - so natural resistance is in-evitable - and what ever mongering goes with putting a point of view across - right or wrong. A free-market approach is likely the only way to achieve an outcome in the time frame - in an economy like ours.
Now if UR opposed to the whole process of CO2 pollution and recognition of ways to handle it - then most of this is waffle - and the queue to donate waffle on this topic is boundless.
But - raise the sea-level here on the sunny-coast by 1 metre and huge swathes of the coast are un-livable - airport - proposed hospital (!!) down-town any local beach-side town - Noosa / Coolum / Maroochydore / Caloundra..
Run a ring around the coast-line reflecting various hieght changes and the impact is huge. - The same the world over.
It is a realistic risk - it needs managing.
In the end I believe a number of engineering solutions will be used - as any attempt to successfully unify the world to put their best efforts into action is too high risk to be realistic.
So like millions of others living on in OECD and developing countries we will do our bit to control our obvious inputs. It is smart. Got a problem with it - mostly on cost related issues - go into bat to get the best outcome - I love win-win's.
I also love my kids enough to make a point and hopefully influence a few to keep an open mind at a minimum.
So a CO2 tax - I reckon we can absorb it and in a few years learn to side-step alot of the cost imapact too.
