Leigh Sales is back at the 7.30 report and she put Tony Abbot to the sword tonight . .It would be good to see more journos ask the hard questions of him in particular .Her questioning on a range of issues need to be asked and are rarely being asked by other journos . The big one that I would like her to ask him next time (if there is a next time,I doubt it) is how he plans to meet the emission reductions that his party agrees need to be met . (the way the lib/nats bang on you'd think that its out with the carbon tax and nothing in its place ,its very clear what Tony stands against but thanks to a lack of hard questioning I for one am clueless of what he stands for)
Good onya Leigh ( thumb thumbs up.too bad hardly anyone was watching)
also looking forward to the paraolympics on ABC.

Didn't see it but I'm gonna take a punt and say TA was talking about BHP canning the Olympic dam expansion project, and blaming it on the carbon tax and mining tax.

The mining tax doesn't apply to uranium.

The CEO was very clear that the reasons are the slump in ore prices, ie major drop in demand, coupled with the prolonged extremely high aussie dollar (why buy here when our product's 30% pricier than it was thanks to currency fluctuations) and also the boom, ie difficulty getting workers & materials.

I'm sure that didn't stop TA blaming Labor and the carbon tax. That's all he can do. He's a one line pony.

Mr Float, you're right, Leigh Sales was absolutely perfect there. Totally hammered him. About time a journo did so.

His answers were just lame.

Love it.

The Oz's latest attack on gillard is falling flat (due in part to the fact that there's no case to answer, also to the fact that the main accuser Larry Pickering the Cartoonist being an horrible **** that no-one wants to go near) and the opposition are backing away from it as fast as they can. I love how Leigh tried to get TA to come out and accuse Gillard of something specific, and he shied away as fast as he could, because he knows it's a non-event that would come back to bite his arse.

I'm a staunch Liberal voter but I just can't stand this prick, almost at the stage of wearing a fine just so I don't have to vote for the pratt.

Yeah, it really is a race to the bottom for them both, ably assisted by poor media standards!

...because the Labs have done such a bad job?

Let's get all Leigh here and ask for specifics, please. I'm open.

No, actually I wouldn't say that at all, good government reforms/initiatives, by both sides, over the last twenty to thirty years (+ having coal + ore) have left our economy currently in great shape (although perhaps not as diverse as needed for post mining boom).

However... the way the media is handled by both sides, and the way in which the media has continually ignited the situation has meant that the focus is not on the positive but continually on the negative.

Labs have been too worried about anything negative being reported, so try to cover up and just dig deeper hole - instead of at least trying to engage on where some things went wrong, how the problems will be rectified, and what were the learnings etc going forward.

Dr No...well I think they could do better.

So I think they really are in a race to the bottom and this is reflected in the personal approval ratings of both those individuals.

Do I wan't that? no way. Turnbull is a certainty if he leads the liberal party to the next election. And the Liberals know it. They also know that Gillard will wipe the floor with Abbott in an election campaign. The thing is the government know that if they're 5 or 6 percentage points behind, coming into a 6 week campaign then they'l defeat Abbott. It's that close now, and at some point the power brokers on the Liberal side will be forced to jump and go for Turnbull

Well, how can Gillard be replaced? She stood against Rudd and flogged him.......there's no one else in the party that'l stand. So , the only way she's going to be removed from the Prime ministership is at the ballot box. So she's got a year to go, with good numbers, and the poll tide turning very quickly. Remember she's only 6 points behind on a two party preferred. And up against someone like Abbott, anythings possible.

No doubting Abbott's boxing form, like some sort of punch drunk fighter he keeps with the same message. Trouble is his message is being played to an increasingly smaller audience.

He repeatedly said and asserted in the interview that he didn't read the release put out by the BHP head Marius Kloppers. But quoted Jack Nasser instead.

Now he is claiming that he did!!!

They guy is a dead set nut job.

I would vote for Turnbull, - if - he stops threatening to can the 1/2 finished NBN rollout. That is his one job at the moment (attack the NBN), so I understand he as to do it, and maybe if he got the leadership then he'd be free to drop it.

However, when you think about it there's some dodgy libs waiting in the wings for a shot at leadership:
Abetz (righty religious nut)
Poodle boy pyne
Sloppy Joe (most likely contender)
Bronwyn Bishop (libs version of gillard)

Gee Leigh was much easier on that Irish guy that runs Qantas . He managed to get away with his "we're just doin fine thanks" answers quite well when Leigh put it to him that Qantas is pretty well fooked according to many and that his pay packet and bonuses arne't really jostified.(I don't think she really likes Tony and thinks his "Australia's up **** creek without a paddle under the current mob runnin the show" line is a bit tired and warrants further investigation .(Maybe the Irish guy lets her fly in the nice part of the plane when she flys)

God I wish I could find the post from last year where I said the ebb and flow of political fashion meant that Labor had their timing just right for another term; which looked impossible last year. All they had to do was keep giving Abattoir enough rope. I could gloat all afternoon.

I don't think Turnbull has the numbers in his own party, judging simply by the job he's been given; essentially the dunce cap in the corner.

Rudd neither.

I think almost everyone wants to see Rudd v Turnbull.

I don't trust Turnbull. He sounds perfectly reasonable and intelligent, like someone you would want to vote for ... but then he does his job of attacking the NBN and rolling out the same old political crap.

Gillard gave a press conference the next day which lasted 1hr 12 minutes. She took any and every question from the press and answered them.

The contrast was amazing - blithering abbot can't handle 12 minutes of actual pressure, PM calmly dispatches 72 minutes of off the cuff questions.

I think you'll find that over the last few years, many have interviewed Gillard with gusto, and none have taken on Abbott with any real vigour. And that's why people were so entertained - a journo finally called him on his BS and he couldn't handle it. JG handles that type of thing on a regular basis.
