We are planning to sail up north from Sydney during the summer holidays. How far up can you go without getting to close to the Hurricane region? We have kids on board and it will be our first longer trip out in open waters. J
Hi there,
The cyclone season runs from around December thru may, with later ones on the odd occasion. The Chery Venture was forced ashore by "an unseasonal cyclone in July" or so the quote goes.
Summer school holidays, up and back, say a week each way with plenty of time to stop, say limit it to the gold coast, for easy sailing.
Coffs harbour is an easy port, pleasant to stay for a few days......then maybe to Yamba, lots of things to do there.....it all depends how adventurous you are and how much time you want to spend at sea....there are a lot of variables, do you like overnight sailing?
Cheers
Rick
sydney to yamba is great and only an overnighter to southport from there. if expecting a 1 week trip north, then double it with kids as we did. plenty of bolt holes and be prepared to head seaward should it blow hard and render entrances dodgy.
As others said december to may but I wouldn't let it put you off. Just don't go north of cooktown in the cyclone season as anchorages and areas to ride out are limited. Get yourself a copy of cruising the coral coast by alan lucas, and 100 magic miles by I forgot for the whitsundays.
Cyclones are best weathered in the upper reaches of an estury. Crusing the coral coast has advice.
