had a look at the seabreeze news article (right hand side of the webpage) titled "Can you kickflip with a kite" and i remembered seeing ANTANDROY. it's an Fone promotional vid and has some amazing kiting in it.
I think its Mitu Monterio. he rides his SB like he has geko's feet. cant tell if he actually lands the kickflip as the scene is cut right when he lands on the board around 6:20, but impressive non the less

I reckon anyone that can perform strapless tricks a living legend in my mind. Takes so much board and kite control. Amazing.

Here is one of mine, this ones a little bit more kite assisted than i like - but hell someone actually filmed it. I landed a few sketchy ones about 5 or 6 years ago but gave up after hurting my feet, but recently got back into them and have them reasonably consistent. Does open up a whole world of new ideas for progression - unhooked, heel, shuvit, tre, late, backfoot, under, flips waveriding...

Make sure you don't use those fins that are like knife sharp - 200 grit can sort em out tho..

Hey any chance of breaking down that flip into a set of workable instructions?? I'm thinking more on my skim but same same.

no worries

start like this..

learn straight ollies - easier off a small chop - do hundreds..

Then when you got them down, as you leave/just after you leave the water for your ollie kick the board very hard and fast downwards with your front foot half way down board on heel side edge. Big floaty ones are a bit different - you use the kite to get you up high and have to have the kite angle angle so that when u flip you are not left up there dangling unable to get back on your board once flipped (ie windier - kite lower). Take full advantage of small chop ramps and your kite to start with - kind of like learning kickflips on a skateboard holding onto a rail. Go hard!

cheers eppo. Its a frontside shuvit, then a kickflip. so your flipping the heel side of your board downward, but first you want to pop, then slide the tail of the board out in front of you. if you do the flip under you, you will overtake the board. hard to explain, but ill see if i can find another pic from a sideways angle.

i also find a wakeskate much easier than a flat directional board. These are old pics of an old wakeskate but i now use the airush kite/wakeskate actually made for kiting, much easier as its wider for more surface area to land on, and less rocker so you dont need to ride 2 kites bigger anymore.

you can see here how you have to pop the board out infront to make the landing.

pity i dont know how to flip this image the right way.

Yep I get ya regarding popping first and sliding the tail out in front. Can we back up a bit. Sorry to sound naive but what's the best way to pop without straps to set up so you can push that rail forward. Might seem obvious but treat me like a moron for a bit. all my stuff has been with straps or strapless on a SB, so only now on the skim am I exploring this really fun side of our sport.

i think the best way to imagine it is like trying to bounce a skate on the trampoline. i normaly lift the nose then push all my weight down to sink the board then as u jump up the boards momentum should come up with u. make sure the nose stays higher as the moving forwards motion helps give the board lift too. hope this helps or even makes sense?

really?? wow, i think the opposite. light stays under your feet easier when you tilt your feet into the wind.. like a surfboard

the weight helps offset the randomness of the wind blowing the board around, not a big issue if u got light moderate wind and a sand bank upwind sheltering wind low down giving you a windless perfect slick... but most don't have that luxury.

Yes. To anyone thinking of trying this kind of thing I don't think that should put anyone off trying it though (if they cannot - or have never even tried on a skateboard) because you can use the kite uplift to make things easier to start with and the consequences on concrete tend to be (not always) more harsh (as long as you sand fins). Just take things slow and the timing will get there, it will take some time.

I think there are some interesting new tricks coming the way of strapless kiteboarding (already have been quite a few..). Progression keeps things interesting.

Not really.
Especially not when you consider people riding wakeskates are usually trying to put their kite-low and do it unhooked. Whilst most "skate inspired" tricks done by people on surfboards are hooked in and with their kite at 12 O'clock. Also the board is about 3 times bigger to land on, meaning you don't have to be real exact with what you are doing.

p.s. A good comparison is a 360 shuv-it on a surfboard vs a wakeskate. Although it may look more impressive to some done on a surfboard, whilst hooked-in and with a kite at 12 it's actually far easier than done on a wakeskate.
