Morning all,
Woodies is becoming fairly busy and the access thoroughfare to the west beach is quite narrow. Can you ensure that you rig your kites at least 10m from the thoroughfare so that other kiters and windsurfers can get through.

P.S. flying your kite through the carpark is not cool, it's just dangerous.

I don't see a problem with the picture you posted. There is a 3m walkway free of lines or any equipment. The only people we really need to make this for are the windsurfers carrying their rigs down the beach, they shouldn't have to play hop scotch with the lines, in this photo, and in general I don't see this as a big issue.

Some issues I see is, people teaching on the offshore side (big group of douchebags with the eski I'm looking at you). People with inadequate leashes (production leashes generally don't cut the mustard if your a frequent user).

To make the spot work ideal the upwind area is for intermediate-advanced riders, the bay and downwind area is for advanced riders crashing tricks. This way kites are not crashing up wind of people all the time. Don't dick around near the beach too long if your not going to do a trick, people normally are queing up behind you to have thier turn.

These are more guidelines than rules, but most people follow it to some extent.

To end on a positive

Please tell me that you are not serious? Have you ever been to a busy beach before? If you can't manage to fit you and your kit past those kites, you may want to consider the Tony Feruson diet.

Unless there is a line drawn it always becomes a fine line but I really cant see why kiters have to cram up into the very top corner of the beach to set up. Whats the problem with walking another 20 steps to leave a triangle of open beach clear at the end of the access path. If the carpark was further away you would walk the extra bit without even thinking about it.
Just human nature I guess - silly but
IMO the two kites in the foreground are in the accessway? - the cab most certainly is.

And its not just for the poleys. When its busy it can become a bit of a joke weaving through the maze of kites & lines to a spot further along to set-up.
And it also puts the walkers off - so we get less of an audience to show off to

The real bottom line here I guess is that if you cant handle crowds just dont come to Woodies. The gaggle on the beach is nothing to the duck and weave needed on the water.

Nice try WestOZ,

It's only when it's mega crowded there's a problem, not like in the photo.

There's about 2000 metres of beach available at Woodies, the request to keep a specific ten metres free of obstruction is quite reasonable.

P.S. If you want to fly your kite in the car park, make sure you're insured. I'm hoping to catch some footage this season to win "Australia's funniest Home Videos"

Yeah it would be nice for there to be 10m, but why 10m? Why not 3-4m. It's a very minor issue, mostly on super crowded days.

It pales in significance to issues occuring on other beaches.

I'm all for no rules, but last time I walked over someones lines they seemed rather upset.

One of my non wind orientated friends thinks it's hilarious the arguments about Woodies.

His comments:
"Do you guys have any idea what's buried up there ?"

"Normal people don't hang around up there"

OMG,
Just checked some of the kiters profiles

I'm old enough to be their father, In fact I spent a lot of time around Caloundra in the late 80's early 90's

No wonder I can't make sense of some of this young person speak.

I'm off to find the crazy old man whingeing forum !

I windsurf,

Every time I have been to Woodies I carry my rig over the kite lines that are laying on the ground, I even take care not to step on them, however after reading the comments about the photo (Which was and example of where NOT to set kites up) as opposed to a bad example of what happens when kites are laying across the thoroughfare, I think I will stomp all over the lines and leave my windsurfer exactly where the kiters rig up......

Grow up and realise that this is a simple request to share a small area of beach, lets not consider how much space 1 kite needs to rig up, you could rig 3 windsurfing kits in the same space, why cant we be able to not worry about tripping over lines that are half buried in the sand while carrying our rigs????

Instead of showing your imaturity show some courtesy PLEASE!

PS I launched a kite at Woodies last week coz the kiter could not even get one of his own to help him, does that tell another story????

I hate ranting but sometimes it's required.

Peace on the water and learn to share.

Cheers GT

Has anyone been to places like Cabarete (Dominican Republic) the kite beach can get real busy? But all you do is set your lines up, then if you`re not launching straight away just bring the bar to the kite folding the lines in half. If you do that slowly the lines wont tangle. You can even fold them again to make even more space for others. When you land the kite just do the same. I do this almost all the time, especially when I`m not going to launch straight away or having a rest. That way there`s space for other people to use the beach. And I`m not worried every time a dog comes running past. I guess it all boils down to common courtecy, but let`s not even go there.

Gross overstatement there I think. There are rarely that many kites rigged up on the beach and I am down at Woodies 3-4 times a week. The example shown is NOT the norm either the throughfare usually has plenty of room to walk your rig to the groin for launch - I mean you could fit a bus through there... Your gear is heavy so you probably dont want to carry any further than you have to anyway.

I do agree that plenty of room and courtesy should be given to everyone who uses this beach including dogs, people, windsurfers, fishermen etc. Woodies is for everyone and not the exclusive reserve of the Kiting community.

Sci,
That photos giving me nightmares

I think what's really need is a bigger car park and better beach access.

I reckon a car park and decent beach access at the northern bay (offshore) would be a dream come true .....

As long as we all try to be cooperative for everyone then it will be all good.
