I have a flat bottom board that works fine for me but have noticed most other boards have concave or channeled bottoms. Is this for better up wind ability or something else
My board also has heaps of flex were others are stiff. Is this for softer landings

Quad concave, with reverse V through the tail and quadruple steps for flex are the best boards period....

dave, can you please include an example brand/make... just wanna check out some pics...

Moons, more flex is better and more forgivving on landings... the channels also do the same thing... channels grip well on the water too... Stiff flat board will not be so nice to ride in chop... ideal for some very flat water and speed riding...

I had a semi stiff board with flat bottom like yours, and now i ride more flex with channels, but there is no signifficant difference in upwind ability. It all comes down to a rider in the end. I love channels as it's much healthier for my knees on landings, but i feel that the flat bottom had a bit more precision.

Boards with a flat bottom and more flex are less responsive & have reduced pop (because of the flex)

channels in boards gives it more grip and drive off the waters surface depending on where the channels are, for example a Underground Styx which has a channel running all the way through the board and channels on the rail is going to have increased up wind ability and hold this also reduces the skippy feeling you get when putting in a edge in over powered situations (or when poping/ stopping quickly)

Another good example is the Cab Custom which has channels at the tip and tail of the board but a flatted out mid section for a skatey feel with equal weight distribution, this board is best ridden back foot heavy because of the amount of rocker the board holds.

Depending on what you want out of the board, where your riding Chop or flat water? waves? softer landings, more pop....

No you dont, you want a picklefork..... Massive pop, the fork gives grip by providing a release point through the tail and rides upwind like a truck at 5'11". pure cutting edge........

screw the board , tell me how you got your lawn so freakin nice . I'm battling with the lawns in my new place and debating if i should just rip it all up, level it and start again

Does the lawn have any concave for extra moisture retention, or is it flat for more pop?

@Dave:
Does that board boost better than a small freestyle board? What size is it?

It's not the size of Dave's board but the fact that it has grass above it.

It's 5'11". This monster carries so much forward momentum when you send the kite, watch out!
