Anyone out there ride mutants? If so which one, why and how do they perform in waves? The latest production one I can find is Shinn wave in 2009? What's everone's thoughts on this style of board? Or are they in between but no good at either!
Hi Eppo,
I have been riding the Cardboards Wave 148 a bit recently and quite like it, however I haven't had it in the waves as yet. I think it would be a fun board in the waves if you want to ride a twin tip. It rides and feels like a twin tip but with a bit more grip at the surf fins end.
If you expect it to ride like a full on mutant like the Airush Fusions, then it wont suit you. It's basically a surf twin tip designed for wave shredding with the ability to ride both ways. It rides comfortably through the chop with the twin concave bottom design and narrow tips. Fins are 50mm on the nose and 80mm surf type fins on the other end.
Good looking board with a 3 year waranty. My goal is to get it into the waves and give it a workout so I can offer you better insights into it's wave performance. I have a demo in the truck for those interested.

Me! Shinn Wave. Love it. Been riding it for about 12 months. I put smaller Underground fins on the front and changed the footstraps to a thinner softer surf style strap. I ride it in both surf and flat water.
Riding backwards (bigger fins at the front) is a bit challenging but certainly not impossible due to the lack of tip lift and it doesn't go well off the wind backwards, I usually flick to toeside to run off the wind. I ride it toeside 40% of the time since it so easy this way due to the 60/40 layout of the footstraps.
A good idea too is to get a sliding hook spreader bar for your harness. It makers toeside much easier when you can have the hook on your hip.
It excells at carving turns up and down a wave face as well as full power transitions.

Yes I still own an original airush mutant would you believe it! No I'm not looking for a traditional mutant style (My thoughts are they don't quite do flat, chop or waves really well, leaves you in the middle ground). But this looks along the same lines as the flysurfer flywave. A TT principally with a little more fin for grip in waves on one side.
Would be very interested to hear your review in the waves. Donw in mandurah, if you head this way drop us a line through eppenvanderaa@bigpond.com.
Cheers

Nice looking water! What other boards have you ridden and how do they compare?

Yes something like the Dyna Bar V5? I must admit, this board does intrigue me.I used to ride a full blown Airrush mutant back in 04 or something? Does it plane likea twintip in the directional stance? Did the underground fins stop the catching? How hard is it on the knees - is it soft through the chop? How does it land the other way (used to riding a tt now and land and jump both ways and want to keep at least of that in my arsenal?
