I'll be in Reunion Island 5th - 18th but planning to catch the ferry to Mauritius...
Maybe I'll bump into you guys there.
Thanks Luke. Yeah its tough out here - someones got to do it.
You sold that Rally to Dr Pete. He got a few sick waves before getting gobbled by the beast. Fortunately - he promptly released and saved his kite from certain destruction. lost the bar and lines stuck on the reef. Kite is good.
Having a great time.
More updates soon.
One Eye chewed me up but the kite survived. Need a new bar. Maybe a new kite for spring? Got any specials yet Luke? Dr Pete.
A mate and I are also on the 13/07/11 flight, what size kites have you been flying.
One kiter 100kg the other 80kg many thanks.
Stephen
+1 on the above
Been checking out the forecasts and the live readings, it doesn't appear to be blowing that hard at the moment!
Hi guys,
bring your big kite and small kite - whatever that is. I'm 76kg and riding my 12 and 9 about 50/50.
It is a very unusual year here so far. The summer and autumn months are usually characterised by big depressions and regular storms and cyclones. This year there were none. Like our lack of sea beezes back home. Now the late autumn and winter months here are also uncharacteristic. Usually strong SE winds every day. This year we have lighter winds about 60% of the time. The schools and instructors here are moaning like they have been back home. Seems like La Nina is impacting the Indian Ocean as well.
All that being said, we are still getting in good kiting, and with our boat support, it is safer to kite the offshore breaks in light winds.
Also the readings you are looking at (probably windguru or windfinder) dont show the venturi effect at Le Morne - if its 12knots on windguru, we are on our small kites - 9m. 18knots on windguru and we go 7s or 5s
Look us up when your here and join our parties. yewwww
Thanks for the tip mate - I might just bring the 12m and leave the 9m at home - I ride the 12m in up to 25 knots happily. (Twin Tip)
I'm coming on the ferry over from Reunion Island - I hear you can camp on the beach at Le Morne? If not, where is the best (cheapest) place to stay nearby? The places at Le Morne are well expensive...
just got back from Mauritius Le Morne. stayed at the Hotel Paradis which is on the northern tip of the hammer head.
Good wind in the first week then dropped off then had a last kite on the last day at (7am in the morning Windy for 5 hours) second week on saturday the 23rd of July.
Wind is unpredictable, it can be good in the morning or good in the afternoon. The trade wind does not appear to have really kicked in so far. Ask the local for which web site to use , windfinder / windguru predictions are not reliable and can disappoint. Better to ask a local . see contact below
The best place to kite is in front of the Indian Resort southern tip of the hammer head pennisula. Good on the easterly , south easter and southerly.
Couple of great guys to call who are at the beach everyday and happy to give a current wind update.

The conditions otherwise brilliant , smorgasbord of crystal clear flat water, huge tubes and waves and small waves. Plus boat support if you really crash out. Bring your booties as the coral and beach pebbles are sharp. I cut my foot 3 times before I decided that I better wear something before I was put out of action from coral cuts.
One eye is called that because there is a small hole in the side of the le morne mountain which lets light come through, can be seen from the beach on the western side of le morne, The profile of a face with a flat nose appears on the edge of the le morne rock and the hole is its "one eye" which looks out at the reef break call "one eye" , This break produces a very fast wave on both sides of it. Its a fickle wave and doesn't always appear. There are plenty of other great breaks for the surf lovers.
The Le morne mountain is well worth the climb, 2-3 hours return. The view is breath taking. Must go up with the guide Yan 7th generation french mauritian.
Have a great time, I'm only wondering when I can get back there again.
Best months are July to October. Locals tell me the wind has changed and it seems to come in consistently later in the season , closer to october than July. But thats the weather for you very chaotic!
If you have a choice of kites to take then take everything, they don't weigh much and you don't risk having wind with the wrong kite. The conditions are too good not to go out every time there is anything decent.
I just went recently as well, (wish I was still there), didn't really get the best conditions but still managed to get out most days and had a ball.
Kite Beach at Le Morne.
One Eye.
Not a bad set up, flat water in the lagoon and waves out the back.
