Tehy have got some got footage of the event on You Tube [you can get the link on kiteforum]
Based on the footage I cannot believe Vari won as to my mind his cruising floaty down the line style was dull and uninspiring.
I suspect he was the big name local favourite, there was a lot of focus and interviews with him on the footage and Felix and Drew [Go Aussies]each got about 1 wave on the vid each, but from what i could see they were both ripping circles around Martin Vari who never seems to get an edge in on his top turn [hence i suspect the comments about his wonderful 'classical floaters']. With Drew in particular doing some great vert into aerial reo combinations [unlike Felix, Drew rides hooked-in as well as strapped]. Also Guilly Brandao [like Drew another ex pro surfer rather than ex-freestyle kiter]looked to be absolutely killing it on his back hand, in fact without doubt he has the most exciting backhand attack i have ever seen in kiting and made Vari look lame.
Well thats my armchair judging results so have a look and see what you think

Best 2 waves in a 15min heat on a long point break.......
The winner could be chosen out of a hat!
Well done Dreu, Smashing it! Two big international events under your belt now and wikid results. I know North are very proud of their new hot Aussie ripper! Keep up the great work.
Also well done to Vari. I believe it was a very close heat, Vari only just clenched the heat by performing a handle pass 3 on the lip. Pretty smooth move in those sized waves! But Dreu was extremely close on his heels, had the 3 have not gone the right way, the result may have been different! I guess thats why Vari got good points for doing it!
Great level of riding though, and heaps of props out to the boys.
Ohhh, I wish I had waves like that to ride..... sigh......
Regards,
JB
GOOD WORK AUSSIE!
yeh agree with JB, Scarborough looked a little depressing this morning after seeing the chile lefts.
Still a kite before work is ferkin awesome!
cherp!
i agree with JB vari did a 3 and rode well he deserved to win, progression and innovation should always score well, just like surfing. Airs are the future.
Yeah, well done Dreu - I just spoke to Martin and he said Dreu was blowing up and could have easily won the contest! Good to see him doing it for the Aussie's.
Hey, don't worry JB - I heard the waves are going to be just like that at the MAMBO this year - Ha! I hope so...... See ya there
I'm gonna hold you to that Wilson, I really need a good session, I don't get out much anymore!
Either way, Mambo is going to rock! I'll be wearing my bells.
JB
yeh hope its like the waves back in 01 (i think?) they were so sick, and it wasn't to crowded then ethier because everyone still windsurfed......yeh those were the days.
p.s. had to sneak into the pub then to, pretty fun mission over the wall and past the security guards.....mmm pubs seemed alot cooler before you were 18 and for some reason no one left you short of a drink lol.
