Just wondering if anyone has copped a fish to the face while kiting?
I witnessed a good friend of mine get belted in the face while surfing at Broken head once and it left quite a mark on his cheek (it was very funny). If you go sailing in the open ocean there are flying fish everywhere so I imagine it would be pretty normal to see them whizzing past, and get falconed by one occasionally?

do you class a Great White as a fish?
If you do, then I've had experience.

If you don't, then I can't comment.

I've been hit in the nuts with one... Wasn't an actual flying fish, just one that jumped out of the water.

Very funny for all watching at the time...

Laurie Byrne, who is a *** hot surf board shaper from Currawong, (nsw south coast) was surfing in Indo heaps of years ago and was hit whilst surfing a wave, The force, where it hit, was enough to paralyse his arm. He re learnt how to shape and now, quite a few WCT guys ride his boards. So, getting hit by a fish does happen. Getting struck by lightening would be higher!!!!!

I've been chasing after one of these birds and I touched the birds feathers while he was running away from me in the middle of the ocean.

And in return lots of times when I was packing my kite those damn seagulls crapped over me.

When I was over teaching in Cape Verde/ Sal, heard of a windsurfer being impaled through the leg by one of the bigger species of flying fish there, called justly; exocets. Another guy had his rib broken by one. Amazing fish. They fly for up to 40metres or more. Good target practice.

yeah, try catching up to one...I was on a broad reach on my sailboard years ago and one popped out of the water in front of me on the same tack...it was flying down wind at around the same speed just above the nose of my board...your right..it flew for a good 40 or 50mtrs...probably thinking WTF is chasing me?

a guy in the eighties was windsurfing in hawaii and a flying fish (called stickfish in hawaii) went point first into his eye and pierced his brain and he subsequently died.

bad luck hey.

Hi Guys,

I got hit in the chest by one whilst ocean yacht racing many years ago in the night. I wondered WTF had hit me for a few seconds, til we noticed the fish flipping around the cockpit floor.

It was a common task to have to go around the deck in the morning and throw all the dead flying fish back overboard so they wouldn't foul sheet ropes and winches and become something to slip on.

Amazing fish!
