Hey sir V,

I have a few questions re: the line mounting. (some great pics there and interesting perspective).

Is it easier for a good resolution shot form a so-so camera compared to the extra distrance from a kite mount? (There are bargains on Pentax W80's at the mo, but they are not cutting edge and are actually suggested to be inferior to W60 predecessor)

- Well, you can do both but.. add the kitedistance. By the time you zoom in, which you can do easily enough on the W60, the shots will need to have the kite absolutely still to get a properly focused picture. The kite movement is amplified by the distance. I prefer to have my W60 on wide zoom and get the full image (10 Mgpx)

Are those line mount shots above with your Pentax or the Go pro?

- line mounts is the GoPro.. Kite shots are the W60.

Are the lines shots with the wide version of Go pro and/or pentax set at 28mm? There is a bit of fish-eye going on but it's still ok. (Not to be confused with pink-eye - that is not good! )

- Wide version of GoPro

How far in length from the bar is the camera sitting? It looks like +5m but is probably closer to 1-2m? (The extra wide fishy affect?)

- It is a Cab 2009 IDS so the line split is about 2,5 away

Does the lines or buckle end up 'grabbing the attention' of the camera's auto focus a fair bit?

- Nope, you can change the focus mode on the GoPro but as you can see there is no major interfeerence.

Is there any way to angle the mounting to be aiming a bit 'forward' of your normal wave riding posi, to see down the line a bit more?

- You can angle the camera back a few degrees but not much. Kitehero linemount II doesn't let the camera be tilted too far back, it doesn't need it. If you want to do that get hold of a version 1 and you'll have a bigger gap.

Do you like pina coladas?

- Nope, I'm a Scotch man

I don't remember where I was last week!

Here's a pic from the GoPro strapped to the forearm. Video frame again, but full size.

The wide angle has a few disadvantages (mainly you have to be very close to see anything, and it makes waves look tiny, and you get the sun in every other shot), but a lot of advantages too. It's normally hard to aim with the camera on your head or arm, and you get a lot of shake, but with nearly 180deg view you can't miss. Also you get a lot of light in the lens (like a magnifying glass) so you get deep depth of field and fast shutter speed (ie no blur)

Hey nerk I forgot to say how much i dig this shot. The retentive types might suggest it has a little bit of noise, maybe even a tad soft focus (it is a video still after all) but it's such a good shot I reckon. Great perspective chasing the other bloke along the wave. with the arc of the board. Tops.

I assume - even tho the wide angle makes him look a decent distance - you are on his hammer. Ever smacked into the other bloke?

EDIT: Hang on a sec.. is he following you and that's your wake?

Yeah I reckon the trail closest to the camera is Nerk's, as it looks like the other guy's trail is behind him (away from the camera)

Hope we're still on your topic lowstevo! Sorry if not. Yes, you have to be close, but no, no collisions - someone has kite high, the other low, and it's fun, and you try not to run over the other guy if he comes off.

With that photo, I'm in the shot, and a mate (Glenn) is riding blind with the camera on his arm (something I can't do!). It's his wake in the foreground. We found with the wide angle it works just as well if the camera guy faces forward and holds his arm out with the camera facing back.

Here's a couple more...

Awesome shot! Should be captioned something like "Focussing on the challenge of fun" or "In the pursuit of happiness"

A great memory booster, for the guy in the frame, for later in his life.

Just got mine, but since there's no wind I have invented the Doggy Cam setup. Do I win $5?
