Just brought the HD Gopro video camera today and i was wondering are this mounts that come with it and have 3m Tape strong enough to hold the camera on a kite board or should i do something else for a board mount?
Hi there Jumpthefence, I have go pro mount attached to my board with the 3M tape provided. Have tried it on 2 boards, see notes..
- the board must be thoroughly cleaned with an alchool based solvent before applying the flat GoPro mount. I learnt this the hard way (almost).
- the 1st board I cleaned with a normal solvent. It came off after a jump, perhaps a couple of weeks later.
- the 2nd I used a alchool based cleaner and it is still there.
- when you glue it place a hefty weight on top of the mount overnight. It will help the glue to stick properly.
Now ... to prevent losing the camera just in case I had attached a metal ring to one of the fins screw, as in a board leash attachment, and tied a kiteline between the camera and the ring - this was what prevented me losing the camera when it came off.
Does it work? very well indeed. The photos are really good and the angle is great as long as you have a longer board and point the camera slightly high. Otherwise all you see is a big foot if you're using the 170w lens.
Enjoy.

Here's another tip i use when putting tail pads on my boards.. grab a hair dryer and heat the board and the pad before sticking it down..
V,
Is this a twin tip that you are talking about?
Also are you using the round white flat 3M base plate about 12 cm wide or are you using the small flat 3M mount (4 x 5 cm) that comes with the Bag of mounts?
Thanks
Ian
gday i wouldnt use the surf pro mount on a twin tip, i tried mine and after one railey the camera it self snapped off on impact almost lost my camera, too the footage of the event to convince goodtime it wasnt my fault.
Thanks V,
Pics would be handy if you have a chance, especially the metal ring to one of the fins screws as a leash, and the 3M Base plate that you are using.
here are some pics of how I mounted my GoPro to my board.
I used a aluminium plate that I can adjust the angle of by using different holes and can also mount on the other end of the board or mount on my other board.
The metal ring on the other fin screws is for connecting a leash which stopped me loosing the camera the other day when a mount broke from the impact of a kite loop even though I landed the jump.
What was interesting was that the mount broke but the tape held on.
The plate can be rotated 180 deg if you want the camera close to the rail but i've found this position best.
I have put large plastic washers between board and plate to protect the board.
that little black plastic mount smashed off mine. The camera broke the side bits off the black mount. Had a leash to the foot pad so saved the camera.
nothing too weird happened, just boosted, landed, must've copped some water on the side and cruncho. At least it wasn't the camera that broke.
I don't think those black mounts will hold up to much given the forces the camera can cop, let us know how you get along.
The tape certainly didn't budge on mine.
