It says the source is supplied.
Thousands of sharks? Seriously dude, why were you kiting? I know Florida has heaps of sharks- saw it on discovery channel so it must be true. But why would you go kiting when thousands of sharks has closed the beaches?
In saying that, I went kiting today at my spot (briefly) and I get home and the wife tells me there was a shark that had a go at a dog just a kilometer away.

shark tourism is big business in Florida, they go scuba diving to feed and wrestle with them (they even have professional shark "wranglers")

Australian population approx 20,000,000
Road traffic accident caused deaths in 2009 = 1,136
(www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/safety/publications/2009/rda_0909.aspx)

1,136 / 20,000,000 = 0.0000568 ( multiply by 100 = 0.00568% chance to die in a car accident)

Number of kitesurfers world wide approx: 200,000
Number of kite surfing deaths this year = 1 (i haven't heard of any other)

200,000 / 1 = 0.000005 (multiply by 100 = 0.0005 % chance to die from kitesurfing)

Therefore approximately 11 times more likely to die from a car accident.

I guess you could argue that your accumulative chance of dying is slightly increased if you both kite and drive :-)

joke right? You do realise you're comparing the statistics of two different years?

Statistics don't mean anything, it's all about karma.

shhh dextrous... i was just trying to calm Durks down...

But i meant i've only heard of one kitesurfing death in a period of 1 year... maybe two... still doesn't make much difference... it's only if we had 10 deaths each year, that it would compare to the likelihood of the road deaths... besides i just picked up couple figures i could quickly dig up.... i'm not getting paid to calculate official stats

Actually we can use this to quieten our local spots. Lets find out favorite flat water spot and then spend the next month talking about how many sharks we've seen there so everyone else shifts to the other spots.

We'll need to alternate and back each other's stories up so its more believable and find random pictures of sharks off the web so we can claim they're ours. 2 posts a week should do it and if we get the newspapers on board with some claims about massive sharks, we might get away with it. It would help if the water is murky so the guys can't disprove our sitings from helicopters.

I reckon if we play our cards right we could get Altona and St Kilda back as the quietest kiting spots in victoria.

you don't even need to make things up... a 4 meter shark was circling a boat just off altona pier for 10 minutes in december... it was in the paper as well as on seabreeze...

here it is again:
www.heraldsun.com.au/nocookies?a=A.flavipes

i don't know about st kilda, but i wouldn't recommend anyone to kite at Altona... there are also ongoing feces and high level of bacteria issues common to that spot... and the water is always murky so you have no chance or warning if there is something there...

IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR SAFETY DO NOT KITE IN ALTONA!!! NOT EVEN ON SOUTH EASTERLIES !!!

It seems the victim was performing a self rescue, no doubt either because of equipment malfunction or the wind died. Either way he was having a bad day, and then he gets attacked by not one but several sharks. What a nightmare!
