Ok you can find this information if you search for it....but i thought i would put in my 2cents!!

Over the past couple of years i have spent my hard earned winter kiteing holiday $$$ on the 2 best Australian Kiting holidys, recently returning from 10 days on Coco's Island, and in previous years up in FNQ at Cape Flatery!!!

Both trips were EPIC!!! Wind blowing almost everyday, and heaps to do when its not (which was only for a few hours here and there). Cocos Island may seem a hike but its worth every penny once you get there! Locals are random but friendly, Make sure you pack 2 kites thou. Im 85kg and was out in 12-22knots 8 out of 10 days!!!! Be warned thou...you might have to drink Melbourne Bitter...and XXXX is the go in FNQ!!!

So if you ask my opinon, if you are thinking of buying your kites OS, spend your money in Australia on the AWESOME trips we have to offer...I only say this as i work in an office everyday and a true promoter of everything Australian!!! Best go get myself one of those Southern Cross Tats and a Bush Ute!!!

Bring on My next Kiting adventure - Maybe Tassie in Summer!!!

Hey Kitographer,

Yes there is some great waves on the east side of the island, but we didnt kite there - not much set up and landing area (well actually none). and not a sandy bottom...Check with Jen @ Zephyer on this one!!

waves are on the west side of the island and during the trades, this side is always offshore. Good if you like to surf without a kite.

Do you really need to go to Cocos with Zephyer tours or can you go it alone?

What benefit am I going to get from going with a tour group other than the use of the beach shack?

Is the kiting done from one of the smaller Islands or at Kite Beach?

Can anyone kite from Kite Beach, is it a public beach.

Im I right in assuming that the downwinders are conducted by travelling up wind on the boat and then kiting back to West Island.

Not really opposed to going with Zephyer just keen to sound out all the options

A. You can go alone.

A. They will organize accommodation and also transport to & from kite beach - it's a long walk but you can hire a ute or normally there are a few ppl going back & forward that you can get a lift from.

Is the kiting done from one of the smaller Islands or at Kite Beach?
A. Mainly kite beach but I think Zephyr go over to Prison island for a session.

Can anyone kite from Kite Beach, is it a public beach.
A. Yes it is a public beach.

Hav been 3 times, always gone with mates, not a tour. No problems this way and if you like flat water its a great place.

A. Downwinders are normally from Kite Beach to the airstrip.

Not really opposed to going with Zephyer just keen to sound out all the options

Thanks for that info Swinging, any recommendations for accommodation? I like the idea off getting around on a push bike, is that doable from the main accommodation area? (just trying to gauge the sz of the island).

I've been to both Safari lodge and the Cook islands but always keen to try something new.

Hey Dean,

have stayed at Cocos Motel - www.hugedomains.com/domain_profile.cfm?d=cocoscoop&e=com and also Seaview www.cocosseaview.com/

Preferred Seaview but would be better if you are in a group.

If you're on your own probably the Motel would suit - its not flash but its only a place to sleep after a long day on the water. The club (pub) is directly across the road and also the Motel has a restaurant that does a good "all you can eat". The chef prefers if you are staying in the Motel but you can eat there if you stay elsewhere - just stick your head in the door and let him know during the day.

Its probably about 5 kms from the townsite to the beach - its not bitumen road so cycling at the end of the day could be a bit tough unless you are very fit.
The other advantage of the ute is you can go exploring the rest of the island when the tide is out. There is really good snorkelling at the Western end.

You'll probably find that there will be other kiters there who can give you lifts to and from Kite Beach

Enjoy

you dont need to go with zephyr to kite at kite beach - just use the beach about 50m upwind of the zephyr shack.

best bet is to hire a car as well, kite beach is about 6km from accomodation and gives you ultimate flexibility over the island.

try stay at Cocos Castaway, luved it there...the owner is a kitesurfer as well as a top bloke. The accom is really nice too.

car hire is about $550 for a week, try to get one of kylie and ash james...AJ & KJ car rentals, cataways or village bungalows are the flashest accom on the island.. motel is cheap and cheerful enough..just got back 12 hours ago from there... :)

Yea yea you could prob do it a little cheeper - but the "Zepher fun house" is a great way to meet other kiters.

Plus having a kitchen / lounge area / outside area and TROPPY to Drive around in was so much better then hanging out in a motel room. Also just having to organise you kite gear and having your accommodation and travel sorted is the way all holidays should be organised.

TURN UP AND KITE YOURSELF SILLY

What if you wanted to do say three weeks on the Cocos, where would you stay? Are there any cheaper options than the motel?

yeah but for three or four weeks that going to end up costing 2-3k, i know over on the Cook Islands you can rent long stay houses for about $250 - $300 per week. Big difference, that a new kite.
