Once in a life time! Does anyone have a photographic memory I can use for few moments to plant some visuals into the can't forget folder?

Out kiting yesterday evening Narabeen Sydney - strong wind , low surf, clear skies. It could not get better...... But it did suddenly realized I was not the only one making a bit of a splash: whales on the horizon. Couldn't let that opportunity go amiss kited out (at least 5 times further off shore than I have ever been before- a good two KM out) Cruising along on the board , with a couple of large humpback doing full breaches - spectacularly , gloriously and repeatedly- not 50 meters from where I was boarding. The sea was on my side today!

Now if you could just please lend me that photographic memory. I don't think I'll be seeing that again anytime soon.

Matthew.

Sweet!
The Humpback whale population is recovering very well on the east coast, recent estimates are that the population is over 10,000 from around 115 individuals when the last whaling station closed at Byron Bay in 1962.
They're out there every day at this time of year. The last few afternoons I've watched them exploding like bombs going off out to sea.

I don't want to take the shine off your whale buzz, but there are rules about approaching whales, next time you'll know how close you are allowed to be.

So they're more like the proverbial rabbits than.. ahem... whales?

If they were breeding like rabbits I think we'd be looking at about 10,000,000 humpbacks. We'd be calling the japanese, or going back to blubber street lighting.

There were a lot of Southern Right Whales down here a few weeks ago, just hanging out very close to shore waiting for the babies to get fit enough for the swim south, pretty amazing, you could hear them breath and smell the stinky whale breath. There might have even been some kiter close encounters......

Whale/dolphin lovers might like to look at the good work these guys do-

Hey mate, Here's a shot from the beach in Dee Why on the day you were out. Probably one of the whales you were near.

Thanks Rob,

Great to be able to have some pics of them. If anyone has some pics of the whales from narabeen on Friday evening please post - reportedly there was a fairly large group of people cheering the whales on as they frolicked about.

(Rob, great fan of your website BTW, please keep posting your pics.)

Matthew.

Am so feeling your stoke Matt!!

A bunch of us kited all arvo yesterday near Port Macquarie with a few humpbacks playing around 200m from shore. They stayed nearby all day, and after we got out some little ones came in quiet close and starting flipping their tails at each other. Pretty cool session. Still smiling
