Hi Guys,

Just let you know, for those who wants to go to Lhoknga in Aceh - Indonesia for kitesurfing, there is a good spot to do kitesurfing, location in Lhoknga.
The best place to stay in Eddie's Homestay with best accomodation in that area and nicest owner as well, running by two brothers Eddie and Dani. The place is clean, near the beach for kitesurf, good food, peace. Room from $5 up to $15 per night

Have a good stay in Lhoknga

I stayed at Eddies Homestay while I was at Lhok Nya,was great,Eddie and Dani the owners are cool and its just a short walk to the beach, clean ,cable TV with a large flat screen TV in the lounge,AC in some rooms and good quick wifi ,
The kiting was generally ok,wind was bit of a mixed bag,out on my 7m half a dozen times but mostly on a 12m kite, sometimes the wind was strong sometimes a bit gusty, some times it was light but steady, wind was best if it was sunny, there are 3 or 4 different places to eat, food is good, most things are within walking distance, very enjoyable place to hang and kite,I recommend going there

One post each from these guys. Do we know who they are.

I am just back from Lhoknga last week after 17 days kite holiday.
Juddy is there now (At Yudi's Place) with several others from Perth. Let's wait and see what the feedback is.

Eddie's Homestay price from $5 up to $15. You can also see from the website eddieshomestay.com. Simple website but once you are there, you will stay longer. Say hi to Eddie and Dani when you stay there.

One for Laurie here in this. Some forums have a rule that ensures you can't make a post until you have replied to a certain number. I'm sure 10 replies is a fair thing, unless it's in the newb section, to sort out the spruikers from the diehards, no, yes?

gokid has summed it up pretty well.. we stayed at eddies last year in july for a short stay of 3 nights.. eddie and danni are decent educated guys altho 1 of them seems to like been called martin now the homestay is a great option if your on a tight budget otherwise you can pay 4 times more for virtually the same thing for a room at regis's kitecamp which is around the corner on the path to the beach.. if i can offer 1 piece of advice... dont go during ramadan.. no meat and alcohol.. there were 6 sober american surfers staying with us and they resorted to smoking the local herb

Hello Rob,
your report really interesting and useful. I did ask to the guys there to take note of wind conditions during the season so that we can build a nice database also for Aceh. I tough they had more wind.. In Bali we are really struggling!! This year trades are totally missing and only had a handful of days in June that normally is one of our best month... Weather is really screwed up!!

Yudi's Place or Eddie's Place.
That is the question.

But not the only or most important question.

What happen??????????
heeeeeeeee. Once you are there you can see how peace Lhoknga is. You can stay and go anywhere you like, you can choose the place to stay. Many homestay (Guesthouse) available around and close each other.

I highly recommended you to stay at Eddie's Homestay, it decent price from $5 up to 15 dollars, that near the surfcamp and close to the beach as well. or you can choose another homestay around.

To whom is going to Aceh during ramadan, fasting month, do not worry the food available everywhere, You can buy nice cakes on the street started from 2 or 3pm they stop till sunset but the shop open during ramadan, only restaurant they close but open in the afternoon (4pm) where people waiting to eat for their break the fast. It was my experience last year when I stayed at Eddie's homestay. During the morning and lunch I can eat at Eddie's and in the afternoon I can buy everything that I like from the street where they sell fresh cakes, food, etc.
If you there, you will see how fantastic Aceh is, .. do not worry, you will be all right.

Have a good kitesurfing in Lhoknga.
cheers

Just got back from Lhok Nga
Bit of a mixed bag as stated before. First day weather was over cast with rain once a day which then progressed to raining most of the day at the end of the week. most guys were out on 7m - 10m kites.
Weather then improved and wind got quite strong I left for Pulau Weh, at the peak of the rain period a diving and snorkeling Island just to the north for a break.
Last 5 days great weather, but unfortunatly almost no wind, some guys got out for short periods on big kites so I heard.

I decided to stay at Eddies place which is 100m further from the beach than Judies place so dont want to comment on the Kite camp, The other WA crew may want to write up about it. I geneneraly didnt want to be locked into a accomodation deal with meals at $36 a day, so just rocked up at Eddies instead.
Eddies place has rooms from $8 single, $10 double with fan, $ 17 masssive air con room, They rent out surf boards and motorbikes with surfboard racks as well.
The house itsellf is about 2 years old and the pictures you see on the net dont realy give you the right impression, its bassically a purpose built big house with white floor tiles a large common area with the rooms branching off to the sides, Eddies and Danis 84 year old dad hangs around the place and the old dude watches UFC on the big screen most of the time hes cool with travlers, surfers and kiters comming and going all the time. Dani and Eddie are probably two of the friendliest characters I have met in a long time, they will go out of their way to help you in any way possible, like taking me to a local doc for some eardrops at 10pm showing you the restaurants in Banda Aceh at night, the list goes on. Another local guy drove me around town for half a day to find som Polyester resin after I busted out a future fin box on the reef.
Kiting wise I would rate Lhok Nga as good for a week of playing around, probably great for some free style practice, although there are some real nasty rocks to watch out for scatterd all over the place, and can be a real hazard at low tide.
Wave kiting, I didnt find a real good spot, although Regis from the kite camp told me the A frame can work in good conditions, It looks like a big bomy to me with shallow reef, strong currents mostly close outs, or heavy back wash coffee grinder style beach break on the other side of the river, there another beach break 10min up the road which I missed out on, but suposed to be good. The channel out has some ride able shoulders but changes all the time

The place is magic country side wise and probably deserves a trip even with out kiting gear, locals are super friendly I must have be fotographed 50 times with strangers just like that, They actually like us and our western decadence with out wanting our cash, stoked

Hi everyone,

I thought I would post here instead of creating yet another topic on the board.

I got back last week from 10 days in Banda Aceh at the Kiteboarding Camp. Hello to all of my new Aussie friends from WA who were such a joy to hang out with during my stay (Juddy, Duncan, Nic, Tim, Mark and Al - thank you for welcoming me as an honorary Aussie!)

Disclaimer: I'm a newbie to Kiteboarding. I took some lessons with SurfConnect in Qld, bought my first gear but I was never really able to ride sucessfully after about 18 months of trying.

Recap

First day on the camp was spoiled by heavy rains and overall miserable weather.

Day 2, 3 and 4 were spent away from the main beach at a second spot called Black Sands (the Pool) for 9 hours of instructions with Regis, the kiteboarding instructor.

Whilst the first couple of days were really challenging at this spot because of small rolling waves, I thought Regis' lessons were the best I've had thus far. And I've had a fair few different instructors over the last 18 months. Basically by day 3 I was up and riding on the right hand side although I still struggled on the left hand side. Most likely my fault rather than the instructor's.

Day 5,6 and 7 were spent practicing with Regis always keeping and eye out for what I was doing whilst I hired his 2012 and 2013 F-One gear. Much improvement and he always made himself available for discussions and tips which was much appreciated.

Day 8 - Regis and his g/f Alice had organised a day trip for me and a Swiss couple out in the Sumatra Jungle to see elephants. That was a really nice break from kiteboarding and even better given the absence of wind on that day.

Day 9 and 10 were spent relaxing at the camp because the wind almost totally died and there was next to no kiting possible.

Positives:
- Loved my time at the camp
- I might be biased (since I'm fluent in french) but Regis and Alice were awesome, very welcoming, generous of their time and really fun to hang around.
- The accomodation was one of the best I had in Indonesie throughout my 30 day trip. Basic but clean and comfortable.
- The food at Yudi's place was incredible. Amongst many things I had one of the best Nasi Goreng in Indo during my trip, the best BBQ fish of my trip, amazing tempe, etc. There was good variaty and the food was very healthy too.
- I'm 5'9 , 150lbs and I always had plenty of food and was never hungry.
- I treated myself to fresh juice at every meal (extra after breakfeast) during my stay and the whole thing ended up costing me AU$9. A great deal.
- In addition to the WA crew, I met a lot of nice people at the camp (French, Swiss, Aussie, UK, Malaysia) and the atmosphere was very relaxed and enjoyable
- Sarah, Yudi and Ale Ale were very welcoming and hanging around the camp felt like being at home away from home.

Warnings:

- Whilst the instructor Regis is great, the beginner spot at the camp is a 10 min scooter ride outside of the camp and is a bit tricky for a beginner on the first two or three days due to the small waves rolling in. I understand from talking with other travellers that there are better completely flat spot locations better suited for beginners across both Australia and SE Asia but if you keep at it as I did, after 2 or 3 days its not really a problem.

- The kitecamp is a solide 15-20 min hectic scooter ride away from Banda Aceh. In the village there isn't much to do on windless day. It wasn't a problem for me as I paid for a trip to see elephants and spent off days reading and talking to other people but people expecting nightlife, bars, activities, etc are warned. Next time I'm there, I'll rent a scooter for the whole trip so I can easily get out of the village whenever I feel like it.

- As pointed out in a previous message, $37 a day for 3 meals a day and accomodation is a great deal by Australian standards but more expensive then the Indonesian average. No doubt one could do the same trip for cheaper however my view is that one would loose the overall experience of the camp and there is no guarantee the food will be as good as what Sarah and Yudi served us during my stay.

- Whilst I never ended up kiting there (as a newbie I was going with Regis to Black Sands) the main kiting location has a fair few rocks which can be seen standing on the beach. I will let someone else comment on the impact of that on the experience but I understand that Regis has plans in the works to get some of the rocks removed.

- No mosquitos nets in the accomodation. Regis, Alice, Sarah and Yudi all said that it was relatively safe in the village and the region against Malaria and Dengue fever and thus, the accomodation doesn't have mosquito nets. I have been to other places in Indonesia less at risk that Northern Sumatra and they had mosquito nets, Wvery night whilst at the camp I sprayed myself with 14% DEET Off spray and took anti-Malaria tablets everyday whilst I was there. Fingers crossed I haven't had anything but as a personal preference, I don't like playing the odds so mosquito nets would have been appreciated.

- The Banda Aceh region is strictly Muslim so alcohol is not readily available and you have to know where to go to get some.

- The Banda Aceh region is pretty remote and whilst easily accessed with Garuda or Air Asia, in terms of transport, getting there was definitely the highest cost of my trip.

Overall: I really liked the camp and I am already thinking about heading out there next year so yes, I would recommend it.

Hi Fred and others
I concur with comments by my finacee, and with Fred, and with Ray.

Mossie nets would have been nice for sure, for comfort as well as for disease prevention, but our plug-in mossie repeller worked well and we had no bites at night in bed.

An additional note ref food- while you can get other food in the village, you have no guarantee that is is made as hygenically as at Yudi's Place, where Sarah overseas the cooking, and only safe drinking water is used to cook with.
I appreciated the comfort of having a safe and friendly compound to relax in, and not have to think about finding food and lodgings. It was cheap enough that Toolman and I didnt care if we missed a few meals to eat somewhere else. The complications of a strict (not fundamentalist) Muslim culture, in particular not being able to enjoy a beer or two at the beach, and for women to keep shoulders and upper legs covered at least so as not to cause offence, where just that, complications, of what was overall a fantastic holiday, both on and off the water.

The kiting conditions at Lhokgna compares well with Horrocks, Leupung (Black Sands) looks great for long rolling beach break waves, and if you go around the bay a little it goes from onshore to side-on. I didnt try to kite the breaks at Lhoknga, but the currents look very tricky, as per Ray's comments.

We loved touring around the place on no wind days, but would plan to make/print some maps of the area from google maps or whatever, as there are no useful maps available in Aceh (that we could find). Learning a bit of Indonesian would be a good trick too!

We hope next time the trade winds blow properly, but you know, we do a wind dependant sport and anything can happen anywhere you go.

Thanks to Yudi, Sarah, Ale Ale, Fumie, and Eta, at Yudi's Place, and all our friends old and new, we had a great 2 weeks holiday.

PS note of trip costs- for 2 people, flights with Garuda (included allowances for 23kg sporting equiment and 30kg normal luggage, so 43kg each) were around $1800, accomodation for 2 weeks was $1100, spending money excluding 2 nights at Jakarta airport hotel and duty free shopping $500 (mostly spent money on beer as there really isnt a lot to buy in a very non-tourist orientated region).

I got back from Loknga a week ago having spent 14 enjoyable days staying at Yudis place. I kited 8 out of the 14 days 5 of which I kited morning and afternoon, had a couple of good sessions on my 8m & SB in 30 knots, 5 sessions on the 10m & the rest on the 14m all on a SB & I weigh in at 98 kgs so a lot more fun to be had for someone lighter.

If you are looking for a relaxing inexpensive break with a change in culture, great food and great hosts then I would recommend checking out www.yudisplace.com/

Hi Guys! We're pleased to be members of Seabreeze now and be able to keep in touch with you and follow what you are up to and what's happening. We hope the wind has been good for you and you've been having some great kitesurf sessions at home. It was great to catch up with some of you recently when I was in Australia getting some expereience of kitesurfing! Over here in Lhoknga, Banda Aceh, the wind is now offshore and it's time for surfing! Though it won't be long until May and the wind swings round again and will bring some great kitesurfing conditions to Lhoknga, Banda Aceh. We've also updated our website www.yudisplace.com. There's a blog on our new website too, so you can keep in touch with what's happening about Kitesurf in Aceh and Yudis Place. that way Here are some photos, which has a blog too.
