so any budding film makers got any hints for making short video posts for forums like these? happy to start it off:

Make sure to remove background noise, wind etc during editing.

Keep it to about 3mins.

edit out all the lead up to a boost or transition.

Get the video to fill the screen, get rid of the black side bars etc.........

After what you've already described I usually process as follow:

Go over all the footage and cut all the ~80% rubbish (shaky, blurry, boring) to keep only the good bits

Find a nice music with slow/fast part and try to match it with your good landscape shot / action shots

Unless it's a short video where you just throw all random stuff you've got try to arrange the video so it tells a story and don't be afraid to cheat with the actual order in time and cut more stuff again and again.

If there's some non-trivial talking add subtitles

Doing all that should take you a lot of time and make you watch every shot a billion time, but you do need to watch it from start to end a few dozen times again with an outsider eye and see if the "rhythm" is good and you're happy with your work.

All in all it's a lot of effort and can be frustrating when the footage is not as good as you want or when you need to cut something you liked but doesnt fit, but definitely worth it at the end!

Hey mate, Im watching this thread with interest.
Im planning on making a few vids of kiteing this summer.
Have been filming some off shore kayak fishing trips to get a bit of editing practice.
They are still very amature but Im only useing a cheap and nasty action cam, online software and a very old slow laptop.
Here is one of my latest attempts, will be borring if you dont like fishing but tried to show the whole adventure from rigging up, loading up, launching and catching some fish. Threw in a few first attempt underwater shots as well to try and keep it interesting.
Its kind fun heading out fishing in the morrning than spending a couple of hours editing the trip together.
I wish I could afford some decent cams/software/computer.
Anyway, hope you watch it all and can give me some tips. After watching it back myself a few times I can see many scenes I should have shaved a few seconds off from the start and end, but hey,, is good fun learning the editing process.
Cheers.

With the music, try not to play the same three songs everyone else seems to use..

Hi all, great topic and cool vid lotofwind.
I posted my first vid/edit/whatever in the longboarding room not long ago. Nothing serious at all (you can tell that from my awful, awful paddle faces I pull!) just a bit of fun, playing with my gopro black, learning how to edit from scratch (used imovie) etc. Never filmed or edited anything before but having so much fun learning to! Hope ya like it!

As is evident in the attached movies above, it helps if it is a bright sunny day, especially if you are using a Gopro

Here's another from last month, trying out a bit of fancy slow mo stuff at the beginning and the end.
I left a bit of the original sound in under the music so you can here the drag screaming to try and show the speed and power of the fish instead of just seeing a bending rod.
Cant wait for some good winds to make some kitting vids.

hey mate, what's that attachment that you have for your camera that is visible in the first frame?
Something you have jerry-rigged yourself or can someone else who seeks to surf-selfie purchase it...???

It's called a Backymount, just google it and you should find the company selling them. For what it's worth they would be easy to make if you had access to some form of metal fabrication, unfortunately not a skill I have
