Heading O/s for Kiting in August - narrowed down to Coco's Keeling or Mauritius.

Which is more reliable for wind?

I haven't been to Mauritius, but if flatwater is your thing Cocos had wind 9 days out of 10 and some days it blew from dawn til dusk. It's paradise on earth. Go.

Hey Eppo. Wind direction of the trades is SE? I think. Seemed pretty much cross shore to the kite beach the whole time. Some days it blew like stink, round 30 knots, but on average seemed about 18-20 knots. When I was there we had no wind meters and no phones or internet so this is all a bit of a guesstimate. I took a 10 & a 7m and used the smaller kite more. I think the BOM has historical data available from the weather station there.

I would imagine they would both have pretty much the same chance of wind, although a long way apart they both share the SE trade winds.

I went to Mauritius last year with Kitethrills and really enjoyed it despite a few windless days, that would be my choice because I like my waves.
However I have heard good things about Cocos as well, so if you are happy with flat water I don't think you will regret it whatever you decide.

I am heading back to Indo this August, the wind might be a bit more fickle but the waves should keep me happy with or without wind.

Flights are cheaper to Cocos unless you book in advance for Mauritius. I live in WA and booked 4 months ago for a trip in July to Mauritius, price of flight was the same price as flights to Cocos. Accommodation is cheaper and kiting options are better in Mauritius if you are after waves. Wind probability is higher for Cocos according to the Windfinder website but that is obviously based on historical data so it's anyone's guess.

I went to Mauritius in July last year. I stayed up the road from Le Morne in La Gaulette in the Studios below:

www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Pingo-Studio/La-Gaulette/25485?sc_sau=avdc&sc_pos=1

The guy who runs this place (Ben) organised us transfers to and from the Airport, and hired us a ute for the duration of our stay. As I understand it Ben has a number of Studios and a small fleet of utes. I thought his prices were reasonable and he was always able to help.

My mate and I had a mad time. When it wasn't windy we drove up to the hills, went to Rhumeries and drove up to Port Louis one day. On the last night we took a taxi to Flic en Flac for some mad partying in the clubs. (I had a shot of Sambuca set alight in my mouth for some reason)

Don't worry about the language barrier, most people speak English anyway and everyone is really friendly.

As to the kiting, we didn't get as much wind as we hoped (trades weren't really blowing) but my mate was learning and I was getting out in the waves. You have the full range of conditions in one location. I'd go back again without question. I believe August is a better time to go, although it gets busier...

Where have I decided to go? - good question - sounds like Cocos is more reliable for wind however if there isn't wind then at least there are other things to do in Mauritius. So I am leaning towards Mauritius I guess. We will then probably do Cocos next year. Now just trying to get my wife to buy into letting me go. She says to me "But you have never been on a holiday without your family before" - I said "Well honey I wasn't a kitesurfer before!!"

Could start a new thread on how to manage the Missus??

Mike walker from kitethrills would be best to speak to he's coached at cocos and runs gigs to Mauritius, when i went to the cocos islands for two weeks I used my edge 11 all the time, its a good spot underwater too , fishing diving free dive, good surf at the shack,if your into flat water its great, but left me missing my home spot, not been to Mauritius but I'm desperately trying to get through some jobs and get out there, it can't be a bad spot as f one do a lot of r and d, and rob whittall, from ozone is going again this year , as an alround spot I reckon mauritius sounds the go , if the is wind

Coco's with Zephyr breaks down like this:
Flight return from Perth - $928-$1200
10 Days share house - $2,080 (includes bikes, troopy, beach shack, coaching, rescue service, etc.)

Food and drink extra.
I decided on Cocos cause I'm going by myself so i wanted to have crew to hang out with. You might be able to save a few bucks booking your own accom but I'd rather have the details handled so all i do is eat, sleep, kite, and drink beer.

Cocos is NOT a good place right now ..

I am going to Cocos in July, but if I would have known this before I booked I would have stayed away. We will see what impact this has and if they really get moved to Christmas Island .. I hope for the locals and me of course :)

Bollocks. It will take only days to shift them to Christmas Island. Typical overreaction from the countries worst newspaper. People are willing to risk everything to give their children a future and you're conscerned about how it may impact your holiday.

Hey everyone,

Ive spent many weeks over the years in both places and can whole-heartedly suggest - Do it!

In the interests of full disclosure you should know I run tours to Mauritius, and my good friend runs Zephyr Kite tours to Cocos islands so I"m biased to these places.

Regarding, the whole "refugees flooding Cocos Islands and making it a bad place to be" - Bollocks! My ole mate and original founder of Kitethrills is co-managing the pub/club/cyclone shelter on West island where the refugees are processed and there is no problem - they are all moved on very quickly and it makes no difference to tourists.

Regarding wind - Mauritius and Cocos are very similar - Indian Ocean winter trade winds are the most reliable and consistent. well more so than the pacific winds anyway. Both places can have weaker winds, but they are both still more likely to blow than anywhere else.

The main differences between them are the water conditions, and the cultural experiences.
Water conditions in Cocos are stunningly beautiful coral atoll with internal lagoon of white sandy beaches, warm shallow aqua water.
Water conditions In Mauritius: a flat water lagoon inside a fringing reef that has wave riding on the outside.

Cultural Experience - Cocos is awesome laid back Aussie comforts with twists at every turn - tiny island population antics, attitudes and love of life that leaves you smiling. Mauritius: hugely culturally diverse, with African creole, English, Portuguese, Indian, and French influences. The language barrier is not a significant one that will affect you. Everyone speaks English.

The bigger population and land area on Mauritius results in more "extra-curricular" activities, but really this isn't a huge differences for kiters as usually there are only one or two days any fortnight without wind and there are more then enough "other" activities on cocos to see you through the still days. if you travel with no-kiters then perhaps this might be significant - markets, zoos, clubs, waterfall walks, canyoning, dolphin swims, yacht sailing, etc may appeal.

Both Cocos and Mauritius are fantastic holidays and everyone should do both at some stage.

Mauritius has amazing waves sure, but the really special bit is that you can ride cross offshore waves, in good safety which is a rare opportunity. Cross Offshore waves are so nice to ride as they are clean, bump free faces, and the kite can sit almost still no matter how many top turns you get on the ride. They are hero waves making any rider feel like a superhero.
Its rare to have this set up without fear of being blown out to sea. No matter what the set up - beach or reef, a safety boat and back up support is highly recommended. This is where the Kitethrills Mauritius Tours give great value. You can ride these rare conditions without exorbitant fees to a boat driver to watch you - we group the cost of boat support to make it affordable. As an extra service we have pro photo and video operators capturing the moments you feel like a superhero, and we have video coaching clinics in the evenings.

The cocos is a great place for beginners to learn the sport - Zephyr has an in-house school and operates a great personalised service. Go for 10 days and come home a kiter.

Kitethrills doesn't run a school in Mauritius however there is s agreat beginner bay and a bunch of school competing for your dollar. It gets a little crowded in the beginner bay but there is the opportunity for our boat to take you upwind with your instructor away from the rabble.

the group tour options the we and Zephyr offer are great as they package otherwise expensive items with bulk purchasing and give greater service at the same price that you would get if you did it all yourself. Also, ive enjoyed watching dozens of friendships develop over time between people who meet on the group tour holidays on Cocos and Mauritius. You cant put a price on friendships

In Mauritius, the boat support is kind of essential if you want to fully enjoy the unique opportunity of riding the waves of the outer reef. If you tangle break a line or the wind drops and your 1km offshore, its kind of nerve wracking to rely on a fisherman to see you, come and get you and charge you 100euro or more to save you - I hope he's not having his day off while i drift the deep blue on my way to Africa. It sounds alarmist but each year people are lost at sea in Le Morne. We have a spotters on the beach, in our boat, and our staff on the water all with radios to ensure you get picked up pronto.

With the Cocos, the group tours offer an awesome beach shelter area, services such as spares and demo gear, the pick of the island accommodation ( this year there is a new runway being built and workers are filling the accommodation - there isnt any spare) The Zephyr tours have got the problem solved for you. Also they run an awesome social calendar to keep you on your toes and smiling.

As i said - do both AT LEAST once!
Wow - sorry for the essay.
