Hi and welcome
A freindly crew here and good relations with the lifeguards.
If you are working at the airport you might want to look at living around nelson bay/medowie areas .This is where the best options are with lots of different sites for different wind directions and no crowds from Stockton right up to the bay (nobbys is very crowded in summer ) Keep an eye out in the hookups section there are regular get togethers/downwinders.Hopefully we can deliver a windy time for you

haha

As i've never been to Newie, your directions don't make much sense...

"no crowds from Stockton right up to the bay (nobbys"

isn't nobby's south of stockton??

Where can you kite? (noting no FWD in my possession)
Is Nelson Bay the place?? Google maps doesn't look like its the best??

As much at Medowie and Nelson Bay look pretty, was hoping to live closer to civilisation and live up the live bands Newwie is famous for.

Hi Jessie.. I live in the bay.. Its a nice area and we have some awesome kite spots for all wind directions.. Its probably not the best night life but we do get some pretty cool bands and have some cool pubs.. Clubs are mostly RSL and Bowlos.. It is sort of broken up into 4 areas. The Shoal bay/fingal area.. which is just beautiful.. Nelson bay= tourists. Anna bay=surf beaches.. and the Salamander bay/Corlette area.. which is mostly residential, shopping centres, maccas and all that stuff.. its about 15-20 from the airport and about 35-40 from Newy.. I don't recommend the Medowie/lemon tree/tanilba bay areas.. not if you like any sort of night life anyway.. If your looking for share accom. Newy will be the go. They have a huge UNI there so i guess there is a lot more share accom.. And the Novocastrians are among the friendliest people in Aus.. If you wanted to spend a bit more I could rent you a fully furnished house for 6 months for $280 pw. 2 mins from the beach overlooking a golf course.. Anyway if you have any questions at all you can give me a call. My phone numbers are in my adverts.. Ben
Here is a little pic of our sweet beaches

heaps of good spots to kite round the hawks nest area (north of nelson bay) and there pretty quiet most of the time, only 40 min drive from the airport

hey nickoff, hows the beach at hawks nest in a southerly, is the swell massive there or do the islands off the southern headland offer some protection?.

when you look at the map of the coast, the hawks nest area up to seal rocks really sticks right out, I bet that area really catches the wind from the south and is generally stronger than surrounding areas. Is this true?

Also how does that bit of coast rate for summer north easterlies?

I'm keen to know as I'm thinking of buying a holiday home up that way.

hey bennie

southerlys are usually crap on the ocean side if your after waves cus of yacabah head land (big mountin) unless you head up the northern end, there ok in the bay side near the bolders or down the tip of windy wopper in a SE (theres sometimes small waves around too). in a SW or a S you can go pretty much anywhere in the bay side or around jimmys

any swell comming from the south is usually crap around the southern end of the ocean beach, if you have a 4wd heading up north along the beach usually gets bigger swell and is more side shore in a NEster, NEsters are pretty onshore down near the southern end,

hope this helps

My Ma and Pa have a holiday place up in Hawks Nest. Great kite spot! I second everything that Nickoff said.

One of the best sessions i have ever had was out the front of the river mouth (just west of winda woppa). It was SE, 20kn. There were little waist high waves breaking on the sand bank. On the inside there was hundreds of meters of smooth flat water. There were small sand islands to jump and i was there with one other kiter.... and he left after 20mins. And it was warm. I'd love to score that again right now!

And... the bay side of of the beach right up near yackaba . 25kn NE winds and water that smooth. Ohhhh drool.

Na Bennie it's sh1t. Don't bother. Leave it all for me.

Next summer i'd love to do the 30km downwinder from seal rocks to hawks nest.... or check out some of the islands (if i can organise a support boat).

Do you have a car?
If not you will need to be close to kiting location, but public transport to work.
My suggestion would be live somewhere in Newcastle/Stockton

You will then be in the center of some good kiting locations from caves beach in the south to the bay area in the North.
Stockton or Nobby's could be your regular spots with occasional trips north or south to sample other locations

But till the summer breeze hits, you will generally be travelling to a kiting destionation if you are looking to maximise the time on water.

Anywhere near the uni will not be good as the accomodation is competitive amonst the uni students

Kite at stockton
Live at stockton
You will miss all the main traffic bottle necks getting to work just up the road
Then travel ocassionally to other great kiting places within 45 min
Drive around or ferry it accross the harbour to night spots

What more could you want

with a little help from the seabreeze community you have your decision sorted

Hey Missy, I have been in Newcastle for around 5 years...

If I were a 22 year old female interested in nightlife, there is know way I would live in stockton !!! - it would be a 15-20 minute drive into newcastle, or 30-40 minute drive if you want to go to the bay. or you have to catch the ferry to newcastle - no idea how long that takes. - No Offence Stockton dudes!

I would probably go in any of these suburbs ( they are either on the beach or in town, or within 5 minutes of beach and / or town )

Merewether, Cooks Hill, in Newcastle / Honeysuckle ( plenty of apartments there ),
Hamilton South, Bar beach....

in summer - the beach 5 min away,

in winter, the lake 20 mins away

How long are you staying for?

Stockton = 3 min ferry ride, $2 right to the heart of Newcastle ,runs every 30 mins ,Excellent kiting and not far from lots of spots around Port Stephens too ..More of a mission to drive to Newcastle tho .Wish I had have gone against my wifes advice and bought there when we moved here in 94 .my wife is from Newcastle said "no way its full of stocko's " We could have got a bigger home than where we are now right on the beach for what we paid in kotara back then .There was quite a stigma attached to Stockton back then plus "the BHP was still going then.
