A coal ship has run aground on Nobbies beach Newcastle right next to the surf club.No photos yet
Watch the news tonight
Looks like Stockton will become a popular spot in Newcastle for a while now. Hope they can clear it before the summer.
all jokes aside the situation is worsening apparently there are reports of at least 3 more ships in trouble just off the beaches. One at Stockton and 2 off merewether .Apparently an eyewitness said the first ship that ran aground was just off Newcastle beach trying to get traction in the rough seas and piouetted around and onto Nobbys beach.Maybe not such a bad result
the storm has now passed over and wind is almost as strong from the opposite direction.Might help the ships that are struggling .here's hoping
Quite an amazing weather event .When the wind swung to the west the temp dropped from 16 degrees to 8 . 7 degrees .Must have been the cold pool of air from out west crashing into the warm SE winds (off the ocean which is currentyly 21 degrees.
News has it the Sea Confidence is expected to run a ground on Stockton Beach soon and the Coral Emerald could go next.
This storm is one way to solve the coal ship waiting list problem off Newcastle harbour!
I wonder if when they know it doesn't look good, can they fill their ballast tanks full of water so they sit deeper in the water.
Then when the weather gets better they could empty out the water to refloat.
top pics guys

If the other three ships run aground on Stockton Beach, the Birubi-Stockton downwinders could gain popularity.
May 26 1974 (33 years ago almost to the day} a low pressure bomb hit Newcastle and pushed the 53000 tonne Sygna onto Stockton beach , (Its still there}. Nobbies is a beautful beach , hope all the fuel doesnt leak out of that ship, it will polute the beaches for a hundred kilometers south. the current travels south at 2-3 knots. thats a nightmare?
On the news last night there looked like there was a neat wave wrapping around the point and the wind offshore......or was i wrong?
So whats the latest? Any fuel leakage? Is it parked permanantly? The little reef offshore will be trashed? Lach? Ric?
they are supposed to use the newcastle tugs and one from brisbane and tow it off. wonder if they can't get it off will all newcastle kiters have to learn to boost 50m over a ocean frieghter?
