Went kiting on Saturday night at Brighton (QLD). I was awesome. The wind was the most constant I have EVER kited in. I will certainly do it again when the conditions are right. Has anybody out there done the same?

but there is a secret society of underground thrill seekers who choose to break the rules and place themselves at the very knife-edge whenever possible.
Join us if you are game - the Secret Beige Night Kiters Society ..sshhhhh
We ppffftt at the threat of being set upon by the sherriffs men (summoned by gropers) and thumb our noses in reply to those who turn theirs up at us.

i met some kiters in melb who kite the bay at nite but they use glow sticks match different colours e,g left hand with left of lead edge right with right n a different colour for middle of leading edge..

i reckon id be crazy to do.. the bay in melb prob a bit safer than the ocean off WA..

The photo was taken at about 9pm. The bright thing in the sky is the moon. Camera set at 1600 iso to capture as much light as possible. The full moon certainly gave enough light to kite in and the wind was a constant 20knt. The wind was sooooo smooth I am guessing but without the heat of the sun there are no thermals hence the wind is a lot cleaner??? Does any body have any facts to back this up?

Firstly, i'm glad YOU were so awesome.
but, I seem to remember one of my favourite threads on this topic involved some lengthy discussion and piss taking on the correct legal lighting for night kiters. Something about a helmet with red and green lights that would have to change sides when you were riding blind.
Anyway i'd agree that the wind is best at night and your theory of thermals i like too.
Cool photo, you look like a ghost.

Night kiting?? Not a problem!! Just get some of the Euro tossers that I've been on the water with before. I'm sure the sun that shines out of their arses will be more than sufficient to have lit night session. Just be careful of the squid that might be attracted to the bright lights. You don't want that ink all over your board!!

Not here in QLD you dont need lights

"Sailboats less than seven metres and vessels under oars must have a torch or lantern showing a white light ready to display in time to prevent a collision."

Used to take my 18foot skiff out for evening races against yachts (and thrash them), didn't legally need the lights. I did fit em pretty quickly few to many close shaves. The wind in the early evening up here is generally better early evening than during the day. Stronger, consistant and onshore the majority of the time

Oh and that is a completely awesome photo kenno

I've been Night Kiting at Woodies before, just because the wind was there, I was up and it started getting dark but the full (or damn close too it) moon came out with no clouds. It was an awesome experience.

The one thing that did get me off the water eventually (after about an hour) was the little voice in my head that said "ok, now you do remember that sharks are most active near dusk". That was enough to convince me I'd had enough fun after being on the water for about 5 hours.
