Hi guys, this just in ....

I just received my copy of the WA Gov, Department of Transport newsletter "Boating Communities" Edition 11, January 2010, and lo and behold, on the cover is a picture of a Marine officer handing over a ticket to a jet skier. LOL!

Page 1 has the article and I quote :-

"Department of Transport infringement statistics reinforce why Personal Water Craft (PWC) or jet ski riders have such a bad reputation on the water.

Almost a third of the total number of the marine safety infringements on the Swan and Canning Rivers last year were issued to PWC riders. A concerning statistic in it's own right, but even more worrying when you consider PWC's only account for seven per cent of the total number of registered recreational vessels on the water."

Hmmmm

KH

Looks more like he is handing him his phone number, even guys in uniform have a soft spot for guys on skis.

Maybe its the other way around? Guys on skis have a soft spot for guys in uniform? I can tell you, if I was being handed a ticket I wouldn't be smiling!

Honestly, what replies did you expect when asking a bunch of environmentally considerate water/wind sportspeople their opinion of fossil fuel guzzling, noisy, polluting jet ski's. This question belonged on a jet ski forum or at least in General Discussion.

I think the replies are tame for what I would have expected.

Just my 2 cents worth, keep the change

I'll preface this by saying that I've never ridden a jet ski and they've never really appealed to me, but...

There's a lot of holier-than-thou folk around here! Might be time to take a step down from the moral high ground people.

The "we're environmentally aware folk who ride wind powered toys so it's fine that we hang sh1t on jet skiers" attitude is a bit of a crock isn't it? Kites are generally made in a less developed country by people paid considerably less than those who buy them, are made of oil derived materials and (with the exception of Dojo who is one step holier than the rest of us because he takes public transport to the beach) are generally driven to the beach.

I just took a visit to my favorite "paddling in boats made from locally sourced, renewable materials with no carbon footprint and taken to the beach on foot" forum and they're all saying pretty much the same stuff about kiters there. I.e they are environmental vandals who are dangerous, noisy, show-offs who clog up the beaches.

Then I took a visit to my favorite jet skiers forum, and they're hanging sh1t on private motor yacht users, again for the same reasons.

Lighten up princess, maybe its time to jump down off that soap box of yours for a change.

Awsome!

And I would consider giving the soap box a rest if it weren't for the fact that I get paid such an awful lot to push certain types of propaganda. Truth be told, I have no authentic opinions. I'm just a spin-doctor-front for various advocacy groups who know that influencing the kiting community is the fastest and surest way to change the world.

Back from surreality land to say excellent post! I realise that we're all hypocrites in various ways and I ponder these issues seriously. I guess it's a fine line sometimes between advocating for slightly lower levels of pollution and/or hypocrisy and just being another part of the problem. Work to change the system from within or try to step outside it and start fresh? Of course as soon as we're born into an affluent economy the whole system is set up to push consumption.

Kiting is for me a minimal (one twintip and two kites) way to escape the concrete jungle, and support my own sanity now and then. Does this just feed the system I want to escape? Yes and no. It also supports my general wellbeing so that I can healthily pursue other perhaps more meaningful projects.

It's the middle way that I have at the moment. Dialogue such as this keeps it evolving.

1) I dont think any of the posted comments have been directed at the original poster but more at jet ski's in general.

2) I dont think peoples concerns regarding jet ski's are to do with enviromental issue ( although they are damn annoying on a quiet beach ) but rather the morons ( at least 90% of them ) that ride them.

as KH mentioned and quoted 1/3 of total fines for a group that covers only 7% of the total number of boat and pwc users......... tells the story.

Using a jetski to tow in etc..... is fine and I dont think anyone really has a problem with that at all ....unfortunately only a very small percentage get used for that and most can be seen and heard racing up and down your local beach about 25-50m from shore with some wetback on board who thinks it is fully sick !! Often also spotted wearing a gold chain and euro shorts....oops now Im stereo typing

You can buy a box of Jute?

Jute - Strong, glossy, coarse fiber, made from two East Indian plants, which is used for making burlap, mats, ropes, sacks, carpet backing, etc.

we had a yamaha 4 stroke we used for tow ins until my brother had his second kid and he decided to sell it. (well his missus decided for him)

4 strokes are way better for tow ins, you don't go that fast when towing in and the 2 stroke ones you have to ride flat out or stand still as they don't like chugging along at the middle speed you need for towing.

4 strokes are also way quieter than a 2 stroke and they don't exhaust smell as much.

the novelty of flat out from a to b wears out pretty quickly, i'm guessing unless ofcourse you're the type of person who likes to spend thier spare time hanging in public carparks comparing car stereo's and exhaust systems with like unminded friends.

i do miss the jet ski, we have a seven kilometre back beach where a bunch of us would throw in for fuel and tow each other into waves for hours, never bothering (or even seeing most times) anyone. and the once a blue moon swells where the outer bombies would break and we'd get whipped into a few big ones while dozens of people would line the headland all hoping to see the jetski get swamped.

when it came time to sell, a group of slicked up young fellows drove down from the western suburbs of sydney in a car with a loud stereo and an even louder exhaust and the first question they asked was, 'eh bro how fast does it go' when we told them, all they replied before handing over the cash was, 'fully sick'

then we watched as they tried to work out how they were going to tow it home on a car without a tow bar...

When the storm came last Friday at 5:30pm, at Brighton 1st Groyne, lightning was out in force, and all kiters made it back to the beach in a hurry, all but one kiter, who's kite couldn't relaunch. A jetskier, zoomed past him twice about 200 metres away, and didn't even slow to ask if he needed help.

Steve, your mysterious jetskier that asssisted would be only be one of a few minority. Give me one good story, i'll give you 10 bad ones.

Um, I don't know anyone whose life was saved by a jetski. I know lots of people whose day at the beach was ruined by one. This is not to say there aren't considerate and useful users, just that the vast majority are so obnoxious that I'd be happy to see them all disappear tomorrow.

Not every kiter is a bogan, but as soon as you grab that tow rope or flick that throttle you certainly jump up a step in selfishness, resource intensiveness, and the loathing of other beach users.

You know someone now.
I may or may not have made it back to shore, but it was almost dark and I was completely tangled in a lynn waterfoil after the bridle partially came to bits, and one of those hoons at brighton saved my ar$e.

@ the haters - jetski owners and riders are not all complete idiots.

i honestly don't think kiters have any room to talk on this topic. The average kiter has the same look at me attitude and jumps close to shore just so people can see them. They don't seem to give a **** about other water users and also conveniently don't seem to know the water laws until the police pitch up.

You guys have fairdinkum lost the plot.

There is more noise coming out of this thread than a 3 stroke helium cooled triple turbo 2200 skidooowaverunnerrrrski with a titainum highspeed prop

Just like most of you have complained that 90% of jetski riders are d!ckheads, 90% of the respondants to this thread are just that by not even writing anything that would be considered an answer to the original question.

It would seam that just like a jet ski rider or a kiter doing their sh!t just offshore to show off to bystanders, you guys have taken it upon yourself to showoff your writing skills and impose your thoughts on the people who genuinely read the thread with interest.

Hi guys,

Unfortunately, no one has nice things to say about jet ski's because of the irresponsible behaviour exhibited by 90% of the owners.

At Pinnaroo Point, they have a space several hundred metres downwind reserved for them, but no one uses that space because there is no one there to see them do there 100th spin and fall off.

With no crowd in their designated spot, they move up to the point in amongst the windsurfing and kitesurfing designated areas and then proceed to do 50mph 30 feet from the waters edge. The speed limits are posted as you enter the beach. 8 knots within 200m of the beach, 8 knots within 45m of a person or other vessel in the water, and yet we have had them use body dragging students as slalom marks.

Almost every Sunday we have to call the water police to come and bust these ar$eholes for dangerous riding amongst the kiters and kiddies swimming in the shallows, and usually the cops turn up and bust a dozen of them. Funny how they all obey the rules when the cops are on site which proves they know the law, but choose to ignore it so everyone can admire their talent up close when the cops leave.

Jet Ski's are a blight on an otherwise beautiful beach landscape on the weekend, destroying the natural ambiance of stunning Perth beaches for everyone else to enjoy. Every weekend 2-3 of these noisy, smelly, obnoxious ski's break down and need to be dragged away.

The owners tend to be hilux or commodore driving boguns, drinkers of cheap wife beater p1ss, that leave their empties all over the beach for others to clean up. They also tend to be aggressive if approached, probably due to a skin full of cheap p1ss and all their chest beating testosterone filled mates all watching.

I hate jet skiers and it's a pity that a potentially useful tool is so badly mis-used. It's not the ski's, it's the owners. If used responsibly ie, 1/2 kilometer off shore where they can't be heard or in the way of other beach goers, then they aren't a problem.

I also would be happy if they all disappeared tomorrow.

KH

Rode / towed with the ULTRA 250X in QLD over Xmas too bad there were no big waves.
Freaking awesome 0-80 in about 2s top speed 110+ ? Plenty of pull to tow a wakeboarder with 2 people on the ski. Apparently the 260 has only marginally better and costs another $5K.
