No scales at home!
Packing and 8 and a 10m kite for a trip to Hawaii Dec..how much baggage weight do i buy?
2 kites (10m north Neo, 8m North Vegas)
2 bars
pump
board
harness
2 weeks of clothes (and a wedding suit)
Any ideas?
thanks!
Haven't done any overseas kiting trips before, but have done plenty of overseas climbing trips with heavy ropes and tents. My advice, get some scales and make sure you are absolutely sure of the weight of your baggage. It's really ** turning up to the baggage check in and realising your estimate was a few kgs off and being stung for it.
Seabreeze is so awesome hey,
everything you need in seconds..
thanks Yves/rowdy.
Now , any ideas how to ensure there is wind for 2 weeks on 1st december in Hawiaii?!
Leave your wedding suit at home, you won't be needing that if you take all that kiting gear odds on their will be no wedding!!
heading to the U.S on Sunday taking pretty much exactly what you're planning to take on your trip ... will let you know how I go with Qantas ;)
Hi I would check luggage allowances with the particular airline.
I used to do the two bag under 23Kg method.1 light kite bag with 2 kites in it plus bar ect and a slightly bigger than necessary Twin tip bags with my clothes around the board. Total weight under 23kgs
That no longer works with some airline and they charge Per Bag. This can work out well on some like Virgin Cause this then allows you to take 2 bags at 23 Kgs each total 46 kgs and they only charge $50 for the extra bag
SAA and Qantas can be way tougher and can charge the second bag at $50 per Kg
Don't take a One bag more than 30kgs. The baggage handlers refuse to move them and you can get stuck
Why don't you Hire a suit and just pack light kite clothes like Baggies and tee shirts
Weigh the empty kite bag first some can weigh up to five Kgs on there own
Just packed mine for tomorrow (thanks Dave for the bag loan!)
- 137 Xenon (with straps and fins)
- 17M, 12M
- 2 x lines and bars
- Mystic (Medium) harness
- pump
Crappy bathroom scales reckon it's 23kg.
will let you know how I go, Qantas allow .. 23kg ;)

Good luck! When I fly in July with Jetstar, I will just buy the full 40kg allowance just to be sure.
Weighed in at 21.5kg's on the Qantas scales.
The big tip - if you're lugging around airports, get a bag with wheels ;)
Last year on Qantas carried:
3x kites 7,11,15
2x tt boards
Wetsuit
Harness
Pump
SS joints
Wetsuit hoodie jacket
Spare footpads/straps
Basic toolkit/spares.
Booties
Used an ION split wheelie bag (fit all clothes in carry on) and both bags came in well under the 2x23kg limit. Didn't have any problems when flying domestic either. Just don't fly domestic on Delta as they WILL f**k you for every dollar they can.
