My favorite kite got munched by a wave the other day and I'm looking for a new one...
I was thinking about repairing it but its getting too old now and a new panel will blow out if i crash it hard so its not worth it....

My old kite was a RRD 9m Hyper type. Loved it.... It had tones lift and yes a bit unstable but still loved it.

I have narrowed it down to:
Naish Torch 9m

Ocean Rodeo 9m

Or the RRD Obsession 9m

I missed the thread about naish... should i avoid them????

I like to be pretty powered and ride against the stopper ball allot. With relative amount of bar pressure. Unhooking, looping and waves is my thing...

What do you think?
Its 41C in Perth today, I'm pretty sure some one can give me some advice, ahh its so damed hot wow...

Or if anyone has a Hyper Type 9 for sale send me a message....

Yes its a pink kite... no i'm not a euro and yes it was the only colour left in that size when i bought it.... ;)

I fly Naish and like the 09 Helix. I suggest you demo kites (more then once) and make your own mind up. I am 95kg and ride a 129 Thorn and a 141 ABOARD Z and have ridden my 14m 09 Helix in 12 - 25 knots, I have ridden my 12m 08 Cult in 15-30 knots. My mate who's 75 kgs and rides a 136 something has a 9m 08 Atom and has ridden in 15 -30 knots. He hates my kites and I'm not a big fan of his. Doesn't mean either kite is better just what a person's preferance is. I must say though I am sick of Naish changing their designs so much every season but at the same time other manufacturers are just pumping out the same design with a different bridle each year which is just as annoying. I was thinking of switching to RRD or F One.

I m flying a Naish Cult 09 and i love it a lot. Never had any trouble with my gear, nothing broke yet and i had some really nice crashes in the waves Kited also with my friends Torch, a 12 m, its a sick kite, very powerful and aggressive. Happy that Naish kept producing this kite...i bought later a Torch 6 m but prefer riding in strong winds my 7 m Rebel since its a bit slower and not that powerful than the Torch...maybe you should give it a try and demo it one day.

My 12m is a Royal from the first year.. I like it but i think i would have to try the smaller sizes as i prefer my RRD, the fact it was a 9m is also another reason why its more enjoyable for me. Since 2004 all the kites that i have bought have been bought with out testing and so far i have had good luck with that but there are so many now i think it would be wise to try before you buy... Thanks

Again, I already looked in the buy sell but if anyone has a 9M RRD hyper type let me know....

Thanks

Oh well, was worth a shot. If it swings your choice at all the designer of Royal kites is the same guy that designed the RRD kites He's just left them and doing his own thing now.

Yes Simone designed the first hyper type and then left RRD. The HT in 9 meter was very quick but unstable over head. In my opinion the Type nine and especially the Obsession 1 were far superior kites to the HT. Hope this helps

torch 2010.......The Torch delivers the smooth power and aggressive turning that performance C-kite riders demand.

C-kites continue to dominate the PKRA tour, and Kevin Langeree rules that arena with the 2010 Torch. Rugged, predictable and reliable, no other C-kite handles as well as the Torch, which is why more top riders choose it over any other C-kite on the market.

Whether your goal is to win competitions. or just take your freestyle riding to the next level, the Torch is your answer. Super smooth, easy handling, hooked-in, unhooked, impressive depower and fantastic relaunch -- these characteristics allow riders of all levels to take advantage of the Torch's unsurpassed performance.

helix 2010.....extreamly good for freestyle but exels in waves.......The Helix continues to bridge the gap between C-shaped and bridled kites with an engaging feel, fast turning and punchy power. The Helix is the exotic sports car of the kite world, pushing the envelope in both design and flying characteristics.

The Helix has been radically redesigned to provide C-shaped performance and feel, while maintaining the depower you expect out of a bridled kite. For 2010, the Helix continues to eveolve with a revolutionary "power foil canopy" Sigma outline. This platform coupled with refinements to the aspect ratio, LE diameter, strut foil and arc have produced the most performance driven Sigma kite ever.

With speed, versatility, huge jumps, kite loops and precision handling, this kite allows riders to push their limits to new heights. the Helix is the next generation in ultra-performance kiteboarding.

Naish kites are awesome to fly but there one pump system is a mess. When a strut pops the leading edge will go down to.
Also they are not real easy to fix.
If this is not an issue, if you dont crash your kite much then they rock.

Thanks for copying and pasting off the Naish website :)

It is helpful info but have to ridden them your self? What do you think?

Yeah i knew about Simmon doing the switch. I bought one of the first Royal kites to hit the market and its still riding well. Bought mine in Late 2007, 12m it is a 2008 kite though, tons of power on the low end. I can kite in such little wind on my 128 Underground and my 12, crazy. I think i mentioned this before but when i was at Pinnaroo the only other kite was that 17 ozone and he was on a surf board. I'm only 70kgs. Same when i was in cuba, i was the only one out of my friends that could ride... hahaha. Thats the one of the few times its fun to ride in light winds, when your friends are watching you and they can't go out ha ha.

Great kite, I use my RRD Hyper type bar on it so don't know if that effects anything. Maybe just the de-power range.

As for the HT, i love that thing or loved it. For it being unstable well that was one of the draw backs, just don't put it above you and always have back line tension and its fine, don't recommend that kite for beginners.

What do people think of the Obsession 2 compared to the HT?

Jeff2231: when you say that do you mean he left Royal now? as he left RRD in 2007/2008 so that was 2.3 years ago now!

Thanks Guys

People loved RRD kites especially the type 9 for silly fast turning response and for wave rider the ability to throw it anywhere in the window instantly and with the power switched almost off, The bar has enough pressure for feedback at all times. They are not without some faults and the 9 in particular could do be a flighty beast to master, like any real thoroughbred.

Type 9 riders were a bit dissappointed with the follow up obsession turning response although still faster than most kites on the market.

RRD have just released their new Wave specific kite the all new 'Religion', that is designed with a short front edge, low aspect, and broad forward sitting rather than trailing wingtips all of which promises turning speed that will meet the demands of the spoilt type 9 riders whose kites are now 3 years old and starting to weaken like yours. They are also specifically built to take a beating in the waves.

John and Andy at SOS are about to take delivery of theiir first order within a week and will have demo kites available. If you don't want to stretch to a new kite then I suspect the shop will have lots of second hand Type 9s soon if riders find the religion is something that meets their now rather picky demands for a kite that turns as well as a type 9.

Cankite, it really depends on your style. Fast turning wave kites may not be a good choice for jumping or any freestyle move, but if the new RRD Type wave proves it..? The Obsession is just a sweet kite (I don't own, but demoed the 9m). Light bar pressure, impressively fast turning in light wind. It likes apparent wind, so it was not that grunty as some others (slingy, torch), but you can kite a whole day without being too sore or tired...just remembered, you like to ride unhooked, so it doesn't really matter. Check out the SOS guys, even just by email. They are helpful brunch, and John and Andy are two of the finest local wave riders (IMHO). They ride RRD's, but I am not sure if they ride unhooked. I haven't tried the new Torch. The 06 ones were mad, I loved them.

wouldnt go near a helix though, dont know what theyre thinking.

Those type 9s are super awsome!, if I wasnt riding a torch, Id be on a RRD.

Ha ha, love the comment about the colour ha ha,

Yeah great advise there thanks. When i say i unhook i really mean that i'm starting too, im no handle pass pro and the only thing i really want to do unhooked is a 360 or 540 etc, i don't care so much for the unhooked stuff but id like to learn. I mainly like to boost off waves, do kite loops, slash waves and just kite hard, kind of aggressive and fast always keeping my board speed up, i don't like kites that have a ridicules amount of bar movement, like Cabrina (they are attracted to trees anyway, right ;) .... hahah JK) and the Helix etc.
That new RRD sounds pretty good though.

Andy and John helped me out with my board and i agree both great people...

Hope i can hang on to my Royal 12m tomorrow....

Here is what i don't like to do, boosted off a wave but timed it wrong and the wave caught me and i lost balance.... ouch... I ended up kicking the board off and landing in really shallow water on my board and breaking my fin off, cut right through my shorty... not to mention that was the first day of my brand new board....

Usually i'm a bit more composed lol....

i apologized to the bystander but as you might see she did not seem fazed by it at all.

Anyway i'm sure ill get some flac for this one..... enjoy and i'm glad i didnt land feet first as i might have broken my legs....

I'm a beginner (only just starting to get upwind on a kite) and I have a 12m Hyper type... I have had it hindenberg on me three times in total, now that I've learnt how it behaves there's no problem. If you see it start to move overhead pull on the bar and it sits back nicely in the window.

Good to see that my bargain kite is actually a good one in the scheme of things
