If it were up to me, unstrapped and strapped would be totally separate divisions ...

"Out of the mouths of babes"
I totally agree.
Only way to go.
But with the current enthusiasm for kiters to use kites to help them perform like great boardriders let the sport evolve from 2 distinct divisions.
If we go the totally 'unstrapped' way we can never develop the potential of mixing in all the possible wave based moves kiting can produce which surfing never could.
How can you possibly judge 'surfing' a wave to 'kiting' a wave with freakish freestyle moves thrown in along with all the talent that makes surfing great.
Lets have unstrapped for surfing purists where only the most basic airs will ever be possible but let those good enough take wave-kiting where only kiting can go have their sport as well.
Its a different playing field altogether. If we get our top level wave riders striving to build freestyle kite manouvres on top of awesome wave riding skill we have a radical new sport.
hhhmmmm ..... we could call it "KITEsurfing"

Problem is - its often difficult to get conditions to produce a result in a single division comp. Multiply all classes X 2 requires lots of good conditions ???

Sorry - wrote all that without reading the rest of the 2 pages. OMG

None of the rabble changes my opinion but I also totally agree with Darren as well.
For yourself and your own riding do what you like best whenever you like. I'm not at all competitive and dont particularly even like comps - of any kind - except that it is where you get to see the great skill others produce. Respect.
Kiting for me (and 95%+ of other kiters) is purely a 'soul thing'.
But we do have a sport. Sport and comps are inevitable so the discussion of how to compete is necessary and valid. For now, imo, it has to be 2 divisions to satisfy all competitors and get true results.

Only if you want to win Bindings give you the support you need to throw REAL buckets I'm not sure why all these clowns persist with riding straps on surfboards when its clear bindings on surfboards are the future.

I actually agree, I think we should all ride straps now. You have exposed me for riding in waves of no consequence and it has enlightened me. Lets get the straps back on so everyone can throw buckets together.

Just out of curiosity (just so I know for if I want to go ride a wave somewhere with straps) what would be regarded as a wave with consequence?

Sorry to have got you guys so angry. I will leave you with another shot of the wave with no consequence.

I actually ride unstrapped ....Bucket boy. By the way a wave only has consequence if you are riding it...

this thread sucks and will suck forever....judging surfing....wether it's with a kite a jet ski....whatever....is and allways will be, a subjective thing, it can't ever be an objective thing ....there are no chequered flags...no finish line...it's what jerry judge thought of joe blows perfomance...and if jerry doesnt actually like joe....joe's got no f#^*!ng chance....throw straps v strapless into the equation...and kids I can't see you ever figuring this one out....."go to the comps and talk bull$#!t to old friends" sounds close....my call is the guy (or girl) having the most fun...is the best surfer out there.

Do the boot boys vs the velcro's in the flatwater gymnastics comps? Or do they have separate divisions?

Shore thing, ride what you like in the surf, just respect the rules. Keep out of the way of any person actually riding the wave, they have right of way..

No, I just have an opinion of what style I like. Just like anyone else.
I bet you think "something about something" to...

p.s. Just to put that statement in perspective though, most of what I have seen of kitesurfing in general doesn't really do much for me, so the fact that I don't really dig the stuff I have seen of Dreu is to be expected.

Lets all put 10 $ in for an airfare to get Rowdy over to west oz. I want to see him take on a good day at margs against dreu, or many of the other rippers there. Leave your 9m + home Rowds all you need here is a 7

Sounds pretty gay to me... Sounds like a competition.
I would rather go have fun searching for something sick and un-crowded with a few mates.

Nice one. now your creating false facts... When did I change my tune?
I have enough old kites in my garage to open a "classics" shop, I'm pretty sure I have a 7m.

p.s. and now I think about it to be completely honest, if I went to Margies I would probably rather go windsurfing.

How the hell do you have 7000 posts!?!

Also on topic, why does someone have to be a pro to have an opinion? Most pro's would never say something controversial in fear of getting dumped by their sponsors. Even if rowdy was a total noob on the surfboard he has been kiting longer than 99% of people on this forum and also a past surfer and windsurfer and has more of a clue than most.

As for the original question I am unsure what I think would be better, the most out there thought I have is it should be just like board handles in competitions, you aren't allowed to use them (makes it much easier to do board offs vs much easier to do airs with straps) although I am not sure I totally agree. People still use board handles, just like people will always use straps but I think perhaps for the competitive scene then perhaps this may be an idea to contemplate.

Its all good fun mate, passionate people make great arguments/discussions and pros have enough of that bubbly ego for some puffd up tit for tat!!!
There is nothing quite like pushing your limits amongst those that are better than you...especially when its for fun, Bring in prize money and status and it gets a bit wierd IMO.

But as far as comps go thats a very good point you have made in your second paragraph.
ill go away coz its not really in my league, im just bored of working and need a few surfs, and a new 7m..any one...
