C'mon Guys,
All those at Mambo or have spoken to people, what happened, who ripped, who won, what was all the goss?
Alright, I'll do it then.
It was windy. Windy NE offshore (of course) Thursday - really gusty, very busy lots of carnage.
Friday; NE and something...can't remember. Water. Kites. Something.
Saturday same thing with a southerly change halfway through day. Not much in the way of waves. Busy busy, more carnage.
Sunday. NE came up. So did swell. Then NE kind of died but by this stage the froth was up. Big waves, flukey light puffy wind - best carnage of entire event.
Sausages were the winner on the day
For weather and conditions its one of the best I can remember, although remembering anything post Mambo is a bit tough and getting tougher!
I'm never going there without a surfboard again, the surf yesterday and sunday was amazing, the left on the rivermouth was going off, huge barrells were being had early on Monday, glassed off with a heavy mist, blue sky with scattered clouds it was an epic morning for those that got up early ( I only watched from the beach).
Thursday was a really good NE, but was very gusty by the time we arrived in the late arvo, I was lit on a 9M Edge.
Friday was SE all day up building from around midday to around the 20 knot mark by stumps, lots of carnage due to the onshore direction and not ideal for waveriding swell was up to shoulder high on the sets.
The Friday night session in the pub was also epic as usual, a mate of mine Terry the Tool turned up, what a road crash he was. The theme was batman and there were lots of sliced up batty people there thats for sure. Terry and I stayed till stumps, and wandered home with some Vic crew, it was good to find my shopping trolley (someone had borrowed it, it was not where I parked it). Thats probably enough said about Friday night.
Saturday SUP conditions were really good in the morning then the wind came up NE, but a Southerly was predicted, it looked really gnarly as it approached about midday but the wind shifted gently and slowly. Some brave souls kited right through it. Then it was on for the rest of the day, most people were done by around 5-6pm, when the wind did back of a bit. Lenten showed up late around 3.30 and blew us all away for an hr or so, up in the river flats people said he was just insanely good. Those river todal pools were awesome and there were several very talented riders up there, especially JP and Dave Sorensen, as well as many I don't have names for, sorry. I had am amazing spill and did a bit of beach ploughing, very lucky to escpae unhurt, got dragged well over 100M after I had a brain f@rt and tried to untangle a line twist in the water without unhooking!!!
Sunday, galssy as in the morning with a rising S swell, the SUP guys had a dream morning, and there are some really outstanding riders, amazing to witness.
Wind started to build from the North suckered lost of people to get on the water but it never really built above 15-18 knots, and it was a struggle to do much with the amazingly good looking and large waves. Very impressed with the riding of Collette, Lee, Troy, Ben, Carl, Danial, Rhys, JB, Rich, Tobes, Ewan, Hayden, Michelle, Stu, and so many others whose names I don't know, sorry again.
Presentation was great as usual and it had a coogee bay ice cream theme, so it was a bit sh!t too!!
Thanks once again to all the volunteers that run the Algies cafe, especially big Phil, he was on fire as usual, especially grilling the groms, as well as he does the food!! Big thanks to the MSC crew, all the wives and behind the scenes supporters, see you next year!!!
Terry does not know how to eat chips eh?
Some of Terry's fans posing with him
Got this terrible infection on Sunday morning, not nice eh?
