Went for a jump today, hit a wave and lost my edge, went underneath the kite, and the kite Hindenburgs. It falls about 5m in front of me, then rolls about 3 times in the remaining 23m untill the lines get tight again, 5th tangle. I look upwind, theres my board about 30m away, i just left it hoping someone would get it. I had to then just bunch up the lines and swim the kite back into the beach. I was about 300m out when this happened. Got back into shore, reliased that no-one had my board, so madly pumped up my other kite and went searching for it. Couldn't find it, and now (thanks to cross-offshore winds) is probably out in the shipping channels, never to be see again...

So at the end of the day, I lost my Naish Thorn, and ended up with this

I guess I'm up for a new board now... any suggestions?

Geeez dude that sucks, I've had a similar thing happen to me a few times now. Faced with either getting pushed so far downwind that I miss the shore, or I'd have to ditch my kite to grab my board. I was lucky because I tried to keep within 50m of my board and didn't self rescue til someone got it for me.

Tricky decision but at 300m out it seems you made the right decision if it was cross-offshore.

Good luck with the knots, they are a lesson in patience

I actually like the photo , contemporary, shows the angst of the moment and the challenges that intertwine through the threads of life, might even get some offers to have hallmark cards printed, I would suggest you enter it in the Ulrick Schubert Photographic Art Award.

Sorry to hear about the board, helps to look at the green pastures – pun intended!

btw what lens and camera did you use?

Similar thing happen to me up on the gold coast. Luckily i used a retractable leash. that has saved my ass a few times now. I definitely recommend them with a helmet, impact vest and even a water proof mobile phone holder for emergencies or just to chat to your mother in law while doing deadmans. When that sort of $h1t happens you don't have to worry so much when you take safety seriously.

Next time put helium in your kite so it really is like the Hindenburg..... Then it'll float..... actually nah it won't. lol

awesome grass mate.......

I hate to say it mate, but KITING 101: Only go out in on/cross-on and maybe cross (depending). This way your board will be ALMOST guaranteed to come back to shore when you do crash and burn. Not just that YOU will be pushed back to shore also, and not have risk the possibility of losing the kite so it doesn't pull you out to sea.

It wasnt really off shore, the beach we kite on isn't straight... its hard to explain, but its pretty much cross-shore/down the beach wind

You could almost shoot a Cheech and Chong movie with a spread like that!!
