It will be great to see the wct back at cloud break. That is the kind of wave you want to see the worlds best competing on.

I guess that means namotu is off limits for us mortals that month each year though.

i thnk scotty is still a little upset at this article http://www.fijitimes.com/story.aspx?id=175560 which hints at the true story as most of you would not know that namotu is 50% owned by tavarua and for 20 years they essentially controlled all of the best surf in fiji for their own interests.. scotty is now backpeddling and trying to distance himself from that relationship.. and for the record i started namotu and if it wasnt for me scotty wouldnt be there.. have another drink scotty.

image attached namotu 93 long before scotty got there i had established the bar which is still the central feature of the resort and developed all of the infrastructire out there inc planting all the trees...i had the lease from 90-95 and was bought out by tavarua, scotty and partners ( with shady brackgrounds )..i used to windsurf in those days it was epic..

I bet you would luv to find another place just like that and do it all again!
That shot makes it look vulnerable to mother nature, did you ever have any problem with big tide and big swell?

I assume you also leased from the same landowners, when you set it up was there also an exclusive arrangement back then on the local breaks?
Or maybe another place to discuss!

Certainly good for all the other locals nowdays, maybe a little crowded for those that have enjoyed it for so long as it was!

hi wdric yes same landowners.. we never encouraged or agreed with the exclusive access policy adopted by tavarua who essentially bought us out to control the area and then were granted exclusive access to namotu - we always encouraged daytrippers as that was our business and welcomed surfers from all around - new owners and tavarua shut all this down and you could only surf wilkes which is onshore a lot of the time this meant very little surf tourism in fiji, its not crowded now and there are plenty of waves to go around with 6 quality waves in the area. it is also great news for local operators who even though these are essentially their waters werent able to take surfers out there due to the exclusive access policy.

yes the weather can turn bad.. we had cyclones in 91 and 93 and back in the 80s there were many bad ones.. 83 oscar was the worst in history sustained winds of 100 knots plus a direct hit and it went on for days..photo attached - it snapped all the big trees in half and the island never fully recovered until i replanted all the nuts and 15 years later with little cyclone action it has recovered. ( developing the island back in the 90s didnt seem like such a good idea with this risk )
