so tether launching my kite in strong winds usually results in me running like the clappers praying to the wind gods not to send my skyward through the wind window and smashing it into the slsc rusty shed at dongara, im usually the only one there and dont trust a passer by or the missus to launch me, anyone whos been to my local in a big frontal with no beach and sea weed and debris will know its not a self launch spot, so ive been doing this and it works a bloody treat, all you need is a nylon tent peg that has a hook, walk your kite to the launch position then as shes set lay it over, walk back to your kite and youll see your lines laying in position, push or knock in the peg just above the ground side steering line float and hook your line under, walk back to kite clicking your heels together and with a gee im clever look on your dial, set kite to it origonal lauch position, walk back to your bar in a leisurly stroll taking in the scenery, when at the bar unhook your line and hook yourself in as normal, leave the peg in as its there for you when you finish your session , when finished tether your kite hook the groundward steering line under and retreive your kite with a bit more heel clicking as you go, cost of peg $2 cost of new kite ?

Christ cauncy can you use some grammatical conventions such as punctuation, maybe a couple of paragraphs as I'm going blind trying to understand what you just said!

Oh okay so you are tethering as poor normal, but pegging down your ground ward steering line to stop that skyward potential of your kite.

That's a bloody good idea, will try it!! Especially in high wind conditions, you never know do you with the tethering method.

I've hooked in plenty of times with my kite flying near the zenith, and just made it in time.

yeh I guess it would work but surely it will still pull a tent peg out of the sand especialy since your kite will need to be slightly further downwind than normal so it doesn't try to dive nose down

I set up my kite sat within arms reach of my bar, without the peg it was constantly trying to take off with me having to grab the bar a fair bit, with the peg it just bobbed a bit never looking like it might take off, the pegs around 350mm and is a peg designed for sand

Hmmm me thinks you should ask someone to show you how to self launch and land your kite properly, unless your talking about flying it in over 35knots by yourself which is dangerously stupid for saftey sake don't end up another statistic.

?dangerously stupid? as apposed to just stupid or dangerous?
What if it was stupidly dangerous? Is the more or less risky that dangerously stupid?
Isn't something that is very dangerous by nature also ?stupid?

Let us resolve this with maths,

35+ knots = Dangerously stupid

dangerous = stupid

So.....

35+ knots =stupid squared.

Stupid = fun

35+ knots = fun Squared.

Root of 35+ knots= fun

result.

35+ knots is farking good fun.

Hey Cauncy, do I understand this correctly?
Still tether as per normal. The peg is at the bar on the steering line that will keep forcing the kite back to earth, the line closest to ground when launching?

Hey I'm all for 35+ I've even done 40knots, but going out on your own without backup in high winds without knowing or being able to self land/launch without tether is just a no no in my books, but hey that's just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.

trialed it again tonight, winds ranging from 13 to 23 knts, rigged the zephyr and full powered it at the bar whilst tethered, didnt move more than 1mtr above the ground, took out the peg and within a minute i had to redirect the kite from flying through the wind arc a few times, took a couple of pictures on my phone so email me your number and ill txt you the pics,

aah that makes sense now eppo. I was thinking cauncy was just using the peg on the bottom outside line without the chicken loop still tethered
by the way those pegs are like $20 round here

youve got fluffy ningaloo sand so maybe a bit longer peg, tried it all ways on all knot settings, depowered, un powered, mid powered, slightly upwind and downwind, works a treat fellas, although i do this with some regret, love watching someone chasing a penduluming kite funny as f8ck

ooogh she did me head in tonight, id liken it to a chick that does everything you want (18 to 20knts) but not all the time( 10 to 12 knts) it was an emotional roller coaster

This might sound like a newbie question. But how do you fingure out the exact location of thepeg before setting yhe kite? Just guess?.
In my location that can have shifty winds on ghe beach yhe kitr can dart foward and back several meters at the edge on launch. That affects the bar location and place to put the peg.

Nope that is a question I had to...I'm always sweeping the kite to find the edge properly. Might be a two stage process, put it up find it it, drop it, walk back put peg in?

Nope not a newbie question at all mr plummett
