The only way to change what happens in a comp is to change the rules. I just watched those vids and thought F**k i'm glad i took up SUP. If you want to compete at the top level then take the straps off. If anyone thinks doing a handle pass with straps on there board is hard then they are dreaming!!!! I have done both, i ride mostly unstraped but i have put straps on my board from time to time but F**k it's easy!!! hell i even won a Aussie tittle with them on and only because the rules stated that they would scored as high as unstapped, so you would have to be stupid not to wear them!!! Really it's not hard just change the rules. By the way i'm back this year so look out NATs..

I thought the Guilly vid was good. He rides both styles good to me. I personally think the strapped looks more progressive.

that vid of mitu was like horrible remake of something from the early directional days, have to agree with jacko & rowdy, it just looks like gymnastics for boys. Make it more like a REAL surf comp. real riding, no training wheels.

There is no better judge than someone who hasn't been exposed to the sport.
If it looks amazing to their untrained eye then it is amazing.

A back roll going down the face of a wave certainly doesn't impress me too much but i believe that it should be done.

Why dumb down the sport by attempting to copy surfing and miss out on the entire added dimension that the kite gives us: BOOSTING

I say keep those straps on and push the limit to crasy level.

Always wanted to pull a massive floater on top of a huge barrel for 10 meters then poke through the roof by pointing the nose down into the wave, land inside the barrel and ride on (try that strapless)

If we put the brakes on kitesurfing, real surfing would become a more progressive sport than ours. Those guys push the limits of themselves, there gear and there sport and if new gear became available that let them go further i bet you they would.

You look at the development of toe surfing allowing riders to catch bigger and bigger waves never ridden before, i'm no surfer but that looks impressive to me. But maybe they should just take off the straps and paddle in so they dont cop **** from a heap of kitesurfers that probably couldn't paddle in to a wave if there life depended on it.

I agree that strapless is more like real surfing, but it is never going to be as popular to the average spectator, and if they don't like it sponsors wont sponsor events.

People that want to ride strapless and unhooked i don't have a issue with because you are doing what you like going out and having fun. People don't come up to you guys and start giving you **** for the way you want to ride. So why do you guys need to give **** to people that don't share your same view. This whole thread is a prime example of how bigger bitches the pure kitesurf community is, let people ride the way they want. Who cares about comps, if someone thinks they can make money from your style of ridding they will develop a product and sell it like the PKRA has, it's just business. get over it.

If you watch any of the latest surfing vids they are way more progressive unstrapped and unassisted by kitepower than kite surfers atm.. It really shows how far kitesurfing can go over time ...some guys like Cory, Mitu etc style it up strapped riding ...but there is alot of guys who dont. It is subjective so if you dont agree no probs. Apart from that EAT BAlls.

Hey look, the winds up

but, no swell

Looks like the strapless boys need to stay home today, while the rest of us enjoy this wicked sport for what it is.

I dont think there's any need to panic. Its early days and styles and skills have a long way to develop.
Guilly, who won the event was a pro surfer and can do whatever, so its not like the sport had actually got there and was going backwards - its going forward on a lot of fronts.

Amazing what you can do with a kite and a surfboard in crap shories .Hmm I wonder what the surfers think

If you look at some of Ian Alldredge's footage, he is doing similar stuff to the strapped guys (360s airs etc) but sans straps. If you want to watch more state of the art strapped airs and handle passes grab a copy of Spare Change.

If you want to kitesurf like a surfer,,,,just go surfing.

Kitesurfing is kitesurfing......not surfing

When kitesurfing you can ride a wave LIKE your surfing,,
but you can also jump and spin,,use the lift from the kite to float over a 15m closeout section,,,,,,that you cant do surfing.

Both are different sports,
both are heaps of fun.

I agree with a lotofwind 100%. When kite surfing should look like surfing that’s your style and choice, but it’s a different sport.
Anyway the most of the people never been to Canary Islands when is blowing like hell, therefore I would be careful with judgment.

I suggest.... the people which are keen to compete in Wave to take part on Pkra World Tour Australia 2010 – Gold Coast.

re footstraps

[b] It is for all those people who dont cant surf!!!!

explain that strapped kite surfing is for people who don't /can't surf to the Margaret river Crew who are as likely to be still paddle-in surfing at 10-12 foot or doing tow ins [strapped] if its bigger on the no wind days. I think you might recieve a derisory laugh and an offer to personally demonstrate your obviously superior skills..

Strapped and unstrapped riding all has its place and time, always will. Fashion [yes that what it is] over-rides all common sense in this sport at times.

The simple fact is the sport has along way to go, no-one has been doing it any more than 10 yrs and the equipment has improved drastically in that time.

Simple fact --Strapped in is a great way of landing airs. They can be legit-airs too, that is an air relying on lip-lift and rider momentum from the wave and not the kite. Perhaps when the strapless crew are looking like jordy Smith, nailing all those air reverse 180s, air 360s and rodeo clowns, the time will have come to say bye bye to straps except for huge surf, meanwhile I get bored watching strap guys still falling off trying to make a simple decent lip smack and then getting in the way while they practice their body drags in the break. I hear a lot of talk about unstrapped airs but see very little action.

Personally I would like to see a lot of guys putting their straps back on at least now and again to push things to the next level, and there will be a next level, just no-one, and i mean no one, is there yet.

A lot of the pro-surfers that you are seeing landing airs on the tour got a leg up on the learning curve by doing tow-in surfing or wake surfing with straps on their boards to get their heads around the move .......so lets stop bagging straps and start accepting that its not straps that are making the sport look lame, lack of rider skill and conceptualisation is doing that .

Watching the pkra wave event video it was saying it was 30 to 50 knots.

That is pretty mental wind.. Friken hard holding that down in any conditions, so maybe straps in extreme conditions just to keep a bit of a toenail onto your board???

This forum is so lame. All this energy and diatribe tearing other people and their choices apart. You need to clean your livers.

Count the posts. There's more negative ones than positive.

When was the last time you were actually stoked?

If you want kiting to be only like surfing..... ditch you flucking kite and go surfing!!!

If you want kiting to only be about wakestyle and boots... buy a flucking boat!

I like to watch it all and it all makes me stoked.. I watched an old dude on a home-made board and a PL foil the other day.... his smile was so contagious.

I like to do downwinders on a twintip on waves.... it makes me smile. Sue me!

bunch of miserable sad sacks
