Why do kite boarder's have to have a crowd. This photo was taken at turquoise bay. That is the busiest beach for about 800km. It's the busiest snorkeling site aswell. So while you may think everyone loves watching you most would prefer you to p*^s off. How long before show offs (he isn't the only one) Get kiteboarding banned on one of the most remote coasts in Aus.
Surely a beach like this is better
Crowd??? What half a dozen people along a huge stretch of beach. I don't quite understand the problem myself... Empty beach, nice flat empty water. Where is this spot? I'm tempted to fly back from Cyprus!!
there is only half a dozen people on the beach because the rest are in the water snorkeling I've been there and the thought of kiting there is ridculous. that whole coastline is beautiful turquoise water sun and wind. Turquoise bay is just like evry other beach along there except that it is crazy crowded, kiters should go to any of the other (better) brilliant beaches (including the magnificent sandy bay and graveyards) and have a good time there.
this is sandy bay, it is flatter, there is no current, the beach is bigger, the parking is just as close and it isn't as offshore as this photo makes out! we kited here last season and shared the beach with 2 other kiters once of the 5 days we were there.
I'd be listening to those that know the beach rather than commenting on it when you don't.
I've worked in the area and unless there's a cyclone coming through, you can pretty much guarantee there's at least two bus loads of tourists in the water at any one time.
There are SOOOOOO many brilliant spots within a stones throw of Turquoise Bay and he's had to drive past them to get there.
The only reason I could think of him kiting there is his kids/friends are having a snorkel and in that case he should have more respect!
I sooo agree with TH, living and experiencing the area too.
DEC (department of environment & cons) are going to inplement kite zones in the very near future. So they have got all ears and eyes open for all kite baording activity interaction in the Ningaloo area.
Sure all the snorkelling tourists at Turquoise Bay that day didn't come and pat the kiter on the back after his session. It would of p**ed me right off if I only had one oportunity in a life time to snorkel there that day!
If all you tourists want to keep coming to our wonderful area -a little respect will go a very long way.
Local kiters in this town wish to keep a good name.
Amazing how people love to judge based on assumptions. I'd get your facts before you start slagging people.
I certainly wouldn't have kited anywhere near bus loads of snorkellers. There was my daughter (who took the shots), her friend and 3-4 snorkellers at most - and I was kiting downwind of them.
I understand where you're ccoming from and the reason I hadn't kited any of the other spots is that the only suitable wind we got happened to be while we were at TB.
I didn't mean to single you out Ian but were sick of people kiting there and the locals cop all the flak. Probably have to be here Liz, to understand the problem but its like kiting between the flags at your local beach on a busy day.
While on the subject (respect) surf mags don't name surf breaks they photo and sure as hell don't give directions. Why do kite mags. Don't you think the local surfers would be p*^^** . Or does that respect not exist when kiting a surf break. If we wan't respect in the surf we must earn it.
Whether there were 4 or 400 people there, it only takes one person to whinge to the ranger about their perceived risk or for one of the tourist buses to rock up while you're out and the result is the same.
As TH said, you're obviously not the only one and it's nothing personal but it's the locals that are going to end up getting penalised. What if it was your local that was getting put at risk?
Cheers,
Brett
