Was not worth the drive today... Forecast was well off!
Anyone have any other good spots around the area that are nice and flat to try out?
I got out at Primbee yesterday for a couple of hours between 11 and 1 two others out
Wasn't the best but had quick fix to keep me going until next time
I was out with Yellow at Primbee. Really bad place to launch if you are a beginner and it is cross shore if you are a beginner i suggest that you do not even attempt to launch there unless there is an experienced kiter there or someone that has launched there before. The way we did it was someone was almost standing in the car park and just had it as close to the reeds as possible without hitting the tree.
Yeah me and terry tried launching there yesterday very difficult terry ended up doing a water launch but wind was to inconsistent
Actually a water launch there would be a good idea if there are two of you. In fact if the kite holder could position the kite vertically at the edge of the wind window, it would remain near stationary and allow the controller to slowly launch the kite. Set the kite up on the offshore wind side and raise it with safety. It could also be a bonus for new kiters to have the person who was holding the kite move up behind you if the winds are strong to steady you for the first few launches until you feel comfortable.
Watch for weeds in low tides especially as they begin to cover the lines under water and cause both drag and tangles.
Hey guys I made a facebook page to easier keep in touch with Illawarra Locals. So if your keen have a look, like the page, load up some shots and get posting on what your doing
here is the link
www.facebook.com/IllawarraKiteSurfing
Yeah just a thought seen as no ones doing anything similar so if you haven't already get on it upload some pics and let everyone know what your up to
Some highlights of kiting the lake
1)Standing directly downwind of a council truck collecting a number of dead animals dumped in the bushes just near the boat ramp
2)Finding masses of used needles left on the grass area and in the carpark on a regualr basis
3)Wading through filthy water and who knows what else to retrieve my 8.5m from trees after a 55kt+ gust (first and only time I have ever used my safety in anger)
4)The smell of myself and every piece of equipment after i got out of the water. Second only to the smell of anything with weed left on it in after a while in a hot car.
Had some fun kites there...but am sure I would have eventually hurt myself launching at primbee. By far the most dangerous launch I have ever seen made worse by the often 10-35kt wind range in a westerly.
Someone needs to build a nice sandbar a few 100m offshore and a walkway out there.
p.s is the wooden slider still in the water?
Ha ha Andrew you forgot the nuclear waste dump and the sulfur mill. What about the sewer treatment plant and the slaughter yard.
Turn it up.
Andrew the wooden slider dissapeared about 4 years ago.
The lake has become a lot cleaner around Primbee area since they put a permanent entrance in.
Havent seen used needles there for quite a while now, place has become a lot more popular with people walking and windsurfers
Yes the place is dodgy for launching and landing kites but if you choose the
right days and spend as little time as possible near the trees with your kite at lunch after launching or before landing then a lot of fun can be had.
Any new guys to the area please dont underestimate how strong the westerlies can get especially when it is WNW,many kiters have been spanked before.Have fun.
Hey mad shots there. Would be some good video too.
Will have to try that camera angle as shots from the board mount are very limited.
Kitch
Teab, if these shots are recent on what day did you take them. It looks like we missed another nice session.
Same day as fingerbones shots but a bit later
Taken between 2.30 pm and 3.30 pm westerly was around 30 knts then
Captured them from video footage ,will try and get a vid together.
Anyone heading down tomorrow morning?
Launch will be a bit dodgy coming from SW but should be good once out past the trees.
Kitch
Terry your right about it being a terrible place to launch in SW and Southerly is even worse. Its very sheltered there with wind from the south. I wouldnt even try launching on the grass. Best to set up and someone launch kite at least 30m west of the shoreline in clean wind.If you want to self launch in this wind direction set up as normal, tie a rope or strap with a hook on it to one of the most west tree trunk of the main cluster, take bar and hook chicken loop to hook of strap on tree, pick up kite and set it at most westerly point on the water so it sits there with lines tensioned and slightly downwind of window.Make sure its sitting there nicely without launching ( most kites sit there nice ) go back to bar and hook into chicken loop without touching steering lines ,then launch. This has worked for me a number of times . I will run ya through it next time we catch up.
As for getting the trees removed a mate of mine and I have had representatives from council and The Lake Illawarra Authority there for an hour a few years ago and all they talked about was stabilizing the foreshore with more casaurina pines.
It wont be long before the lake will be surrounded by these trees and you wont even see the lake.
Be good to get the wipper snipper down there and cut back some of the long grass and reeds on the entrance area. Maybe the council could do that.
Thanks mate, that would be good! Next time I'm down that way will let you know and see where abouts you are. Cheers....
Looks like the doctor is back to his finest, gee it is so hard to take life here without you
.
I can't understand how so many people can be so happy to not see one person at there local
