Anyone got any good water landing and recovery techniques, particularly for a five line kite (North Rebel). I have been dropping the kite with the safety which puts it on its LE okay but trying to bring the kite in when its really blowing stink like it did yesterday can be problematic. I usually haul in on the fifth line till I get to the LE but yesterday it gusted up pretty bad about 3 meters from the end. Kite took lifted and the two seconds that it took to tell my fingers to let go of the line, almost cost me my fingers.. Have some nice war wounds now.

Thanks.

i dont have a rebel, but for my 5th line kite if its blowing pretty hard I do a self rescue, so haul in a few meters of 5th line, then start winding in my lines around the bar, tieing off after every few loops. Make sure you pull in enough 5th line to start with or else you might start to power the kite when you get closer to the end. Its pretty much the same as what youre doing, except when it gusts you have the whole bar to hang on to, not just the lines

Makes total sense, seems obvious in hindsight!

Thanks mate, appreciate it.

There is a thread that discusses self landing the rebel at length... but in summary, bring the kite down on the edge of window until the wing tip touches the sand, then pull the safety line as hard and quick as possible and the kite will roll down and settle on the sand safely. Worst case is that the kite rolls onto its back moving downwind, but as long as you keep pulling in the safety you will have it under control and it will settle down. Just dont stop pulling in the line.

Hope this helps

That will damage the kite over time.

This is the self landing. The key to remember with self landing the rebel is to carry on pulling the 5th line whether it lands fine or not. I.e. don't wait for a problem before you start yanking on it again. In stronger winds, I tend to pull the 5th about 2-3m from the ground this pulls down the leading edge and the stronger wind forces it into the ground with the momentum of the kite falling.
